ONE MORE TIME: Sabers hope to get another title today

DERRY – They want to go 1-0 one more time.
That’s been the simple step by step approach of the Souhegan High School football team throughout the season, but especially the postseason. And today the No. 1, 11-0 Sabers make that final push against No. 2, 10-1 Trinity of Manchester in the NHIAA Division II championship game at 1 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy’s Memorial Field.
Souhegan is returning to the site of its sixth championship, as it beat Pelham here last year 14-11, and is looking for the third title in the Robin Bowkett coaching era. Trinity, meanwhile, is seeking its fifth crown. The Pioneers won their first title in 1988, 10-9 over Concord in Division I, their second in Division V in 2009, third in Division IV in 2011 and fourth most recently two years ago over Campbell in Division III.
The irony is these two teams/programs have never met in a regular season game. Trinity, led by the throwing and running of quarterback Ollie Service, is just in its second year in Division II after winning that Division III crown. So there’s that unknown factor for both teams.
Meanwhile, Souhegan is led by all-everything back/linebacker Ryland Raudelunas, who has rushed for nearly 1500 yards and leads the Sabers in tackles. He sets the tone for a team that has been able to score almost at will, no less than 33 points except in a 19-9 win at Plymouth. Trinity has been the same, in the 30s or 40s except for 14 points in its lone loss to Plymouth, and in a win over Merrimack Valley. And it beat Plymouth 29-27 in the semis.
“Ryland can run, he can catch, and you throw Brody (receiver/back Smith) on top of that,” Sabers senior QB Michael Fiengo said. “If we just play our brand of football, I don’t think anyone can stop us.”
The key, though, if you ask Bowkett, is Souhegan’s defense. The Sabers allowed 14 points in their opener vs. St. Thomas, plus the semis win over Pelham, both 47-14 and 20 in the quarterfinal rematch with Saint Thomas, but that game was over by halftime so secnond units were involved in all three games. The rest of their games the opposition has been held to single digits.
“I think it starts with defense,” Bowkett said. “I think if you have a really good defense and you get stops, I think, I don’t know, it juices up the whole team. …
“We look to go 1-0 every week, and we’ve got to go 1-0 one more week.”
