SUPER MONTH: February arrives and here’s what to see
Welcome, February – we guess.
Never a favorite month; the best part about it is it’s not January. Hmmm, what’s going on the first week of this month, huh?
Anyway, it’s always eventful, so here’s your monthly planner:
SUNDAY, FEB. 1
The first Sunday since Labor Day Weekend without NFL football? Think again. OK, no game, but head to Gillette for the New England Patriots send off to Santa Clara, San Jose, San Francisco, wherever the heck the Super Bowl activity is. Amazing that this is happening. The team buses depart Gillette at 11:30 a.m.
Also today, high school wise, two events that are part of the NHIAA Track & Field Championships will be held at the Paul Sweet Oval at UNH – the 4×800 relay and the high jump. The rest of the events are at Plymouth State the following Sunday. But for this, Division I boys and girls are at 1 p.m. with Division II at 10 a.m.
And it will be the Nashua North-South Battle of the Bridge swim meet at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua, beginning at 9 a.m. February starts off with a bang.
MONDAY, FEB. 2
It’s Super Bowl Opening Night, which is the old Super Bowl Media Day, and your Patriots will be taking center stage as well as the Seattle Seahawks, usually an NFL Network televised event. The Patriots will be on from 7:30 to around 9 p.m. EST and the Seahawks right after.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 4
It’s Bishop Guertin vs. Concord boys hockey, Part II, at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass. at 5:50 p.m. Beats 7:50, right? Always a great take; Concord came out on top 4-3 on Jan. 17.
FRIDAY, FEB. 6
The Winter Olympics – forgot about this, didn’t you – Opening Ceremony is in Milan’s San Siro Stadium. The Games will begin, and go on onto Feb. 22. Wow.
SUNDAY, FEB. 8
Gee, anything big happening today? Yes, Super Bowl LX with your New England Patriots facing the Seattle Seahawks, kickoff 6:25 p.m. EST from Santa Clara, Calif. Will the Patriots pull off the Possible Dream, which seemed impossible a year ago this time? We’ll see. Yours truly will be on hand to tell you all about it.
Also today will be the bulk of the NHIAA Indoor Track Championships at Plymouth State University, Division II at 9 a.m.and Division I at 2 p.m.
Somehow, some way, they’ve got to get away from Super Bowl Sunday.
TUESDAY, FEB. 10
Guess what? We finish with the Patriots – will there be a parade on this day? – and get right into the Red Sox. Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Fort Myers, Fla. Already. Wow.
Locally, it’s the Nashua South boys hosting Bishop Guertin in a great boys hoop city matchup at the Belanger Gym at 6:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 11
It’s the final Battle of the Bridge event for winter – Nashua South at Nashua North wrestling at 6 p.m.
Also it’s the final regular home games for Rivier Univesity men’s and women’s hoop, vs. St. Joe’s of Maine , women at 5 p.m., men at 7. In the women’s game, look for former Hollis Brookline standout Elisabeth Stapelfeld, a senior on the Monks.
SATURDAY, FEB. 14
We are now hitting the non court-ice sports’ postseason events. On this day, it’s the NHIAA Swimming Championships – diving was to be held on Feb. 13– with Division II at 7:45 a.m and Division I soon after, both at UNH
Also on this day, it will be the NHIAA Gymnastics Championships at Salem’sA2 Gym & Cheer, the morning session at 10 a.m.for some teams with the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. for the others (usually the contenders). It will be a Happy Valentine’s Day for some teams; BG is the defending gymnastics champion and Hollis Brookline has been strong in swimming.
SUNDAY, FEB. 15
Ah, the long stretch of life without NFL football begins as far as games go.But don’t worry, this is the day or the first full squad Red Sox workout.
And, for meaningless entertainment, it’s the NBA All-Star Game at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles…ZZZZZ.
THURSDAY, FEB. 19
It’s the Women’s Olympics Gold Medal Game, Team USA vs. Canada? Think so? Shoud be. And should be a good one.
SATURDAY, FEB. 21
It’s high school wrestling’s big day, with the Division Championship Meets. Division I is at Londonderry, Division II at Goffstown, and Division III at ConVal. Division II has the most locals – Alvirne, BG, Milford, Souhegan, Merrimack and Hollis Brookline. Keep an eye on the Sabers and Spartans but there will be a lot of individual local champs.
Ready for actual baseball games? It’s the Red Sox annual spring training opener vs. Northeastern. Baseball games every day now through late October, meaningless or otherwise.
SUNDAY, FEB. 22
It’s the Olympics Men’s Gold Medal Game, with the NHL players involved after an absence four years ago. U.S. vs. Canada? Could be.
TUESDAY, FEB. 24
Its the final day for most teams of the Division I and II boys and girls basketball regular seasons (some teams in Division II do play the following Friday). Comes up quick, right?
The Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s tourney quarterfinals get underway. Right now, if there are play-in games on Monday, that could be when we see both Rivier University teams in action. But the month will determine all that.
SATURDAY, FEB. 28
Wrestling has its Meet of Champions at Pinkerton Academy. The Hackler is huge, perfect place for it.
It’s also the last day to play regular season games for local high school hockey teams. Alvirne-Milford at Nashua North-South at Conway Arena is the pick of the day.
And with that, March will come in….
