UNH Roundup: OT win for women skaters; men win in shootout

STORRS, Conn. — The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey took a close one on the road, topping No. 7 University of Connecticut (19-7-2, 12-5-1 HEA) on Saturday evening at the Toscano Family Ice Forum, winning 3-2 in overtime.

The Wildcats found the game-winning goal just 1:47 into the overtime period, when Alyson Hush (Scarborough, Ontario) dropped a pass for Lee’s Julia Cabral in the high slot, before beating UConn goalie Tia Chan.

Neither team found the back of the net through the opening 20 minutes, keeping the 0-0 deadlock intact. Following the first period, UConn holds the edge on the shot chart, outshooting the ‘Cats 12-6.

UConn opened the scoring midway through the second period, when Claire Murdoch put away a loose rebound glove-side to make it 1-0.

The ‘Cats found the equalizer early in the third period, when Danika Botterill (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba) collected a Julia Cabral (Lee, N.H.) rebound in the low slot, firing past UConn’s Tia Chan to pull the score to 1-1.

New Hampshire took their first lead of the weekend with 6:59 to play in the third period, when Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) poked the puck away from traffic in front of the net, landing at the stick of Addison Finn (Stillwater, Minn.), who fired on goal for her first score of the season and giving the Wildcats the 2-1 edge.

With 3:31 left in the game, UConn grabbed the tying goal when True Thompson took drop pass from Kyla Josifovic before firing on net, beating the ‘Cats defense and forcing overtime.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 4, MERRIMACK 3 (Shootout)

Junior forward Nick Ring scored the winning goal in the 2-1 shootout as the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team tied Merrimack, 3-3, on Saturday evening at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex in Hockey East action. The Wildcats earned two Hockey East points with their 2-1 shootout win.

Ring, junior alternate captain Marty Lavins (Riga, Latvia) and senior Kristaps Skrastins (Grobina, Latvia) each scored in regulation for the Wildcats. Skrastins recorded a multi-point game as he also posted an assist.

Senior goalie Kyle Chauvette of Goffstown tallied 27 saves for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are now 11-13-1 (5-9-1 Hockey East), while the Warriors are 13-12-1 (7-9-1 Hockey East).

Next up for the Wildcats will be a matchup with No. 9 Providence at the Whitt on Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BRYANT 92, UNH 84

Junior guard Jack Graham (Smithfield, R.I.) scored a career-high 22 points but UNH fell at Chace Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon in Smithfield, R.I.

Sophomore forward John Squire scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman guard Tyler Bike of Merrimack also scored 13 points. Junior forward Belal El Shakery and junior guard KiJan Robinson also scored in double digits for the Wildcats with 10 points apiece. Junior guard Comeh Emuobor finished with eight points and six rebounds.

Bryant was led by the quartet of Timofei Rudovskii (23 points), Aaron Davis (17), Keegan Harvey (17) and Ty Tabales (16).

UNH, which entered the game on a four-game winning streak, is now 8-13 overall and 4-4 in America East. Bryant improves to 7-15, 3-5.

UNH returns to action next Saturday (1:30 p.m.) at the University of Vermont.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Junior guard Maggie Cavanaughscored 15 points and tied her career high of nine rebounds in the overtime lossUNH in Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Cavanaugh netted most of her points at the foul line, where she made 11 of 13 attempts. She also had four steals.Junior guard Eva DeChent scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Bryant’s leading scorer was Maranda Nyborg with 14 points. Mia Mancini and Mimi Rubio both put up 11 points. UNH moves to 8-14 overall and 2-7 in America East. Bryant advances to 15-7 overall, 5-4 AE.

The Wildcats return to Lundholm Gymnasium to host the University of Vermont next Saturday.
