Saturday was a good day for two traveling local high school football teams, one establishing its might in Division II and the other bouncing back in Division I.

The Souhegan Sabers pummeled Plymouth in a game many expected to be much, much closer, while Merrimack rolled over Keene, both teams on the road and in tough places to play.

Also, it was a tough day for Nashua South soccer, as both the boys and girls fell to contending Exeter teams.

There was a lot of other action on Saturday, including North’s Eva Gonzales playing well in the NHIAA Girls Individual Golf Championship qualifier, so here you go:

FOOTBALL

SOUHEGAN 46, PLYMOUTH 0

Saber J.J. Bright had two rushing TDs while sophomore QB Romy Jain tossed a pair of TD passes and ran for another as Souhegan improved to 5-0.

Bright had runs of 56, and 19 yards while Jain hit Cole Manning on a 48-yard strike and Charlie Maroun for 68 yards and also had a 2-yard run just before the half to make it 39-0 at the break.

Connor Cassidy added a 50-yard score while Steven Cassidy had a 7-yard TD run.

The effort sets up a Divison II West Conference showdown next Friday night in Amherst between the Sabers and 5-0 Hanover, which roared past Lebanon 59-0 the other night.

MERRIMACK 34, KEENE 7

Reimello Hyde continued his good season with three rushing TDs and Dominick Helmig added another TD run.

Tomahawks QB Trent Jackson also tossed a 59-yard TD pass to Owen Sadowski.

“The team played well after a slow start,” Tomahawks coach Kip Jackson said as Merrimack improved to 3-1 in Division I, 3-2 overall.

Merrimack hosts 4-1 Spaulding next Friday.
