NASHUA – State Police continue to investigate an incident involving a 34-year-old man who is thought to have drowned in the Merrimack River after jumping from the Taylor Falls Bridge on the evening of Aug. 12.

Marine Patrol officers and Nashua Fire Rescue initiated a search at 9:03 p.m. The man was found unresponsive at 11:23 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until the investigation is completed.

From the middle of the bridge, it is a 40-foot drop to the surface of the river, which is approximately 15 feet deep. From that height, the man would have entered the water at about 35 miles per hour. Despite the depth, at that speed, he could have hit the riverbed as well. In addition, the current in the section of the Merrimack travels at about three miles per hour. At that rate, a person could be carried up to a quarter mile downstream in just five minutes.
