Local boys soccer coaches settle in
The biggest change in area boys soccer this fall will come on the sidelines. Five of the 10 teams will have new coaches including one, Ricky Carvalho of Hollis/Brookline, who is moving over from Nashua North.
But new coaches at a school doesn’t mean they are new to the game. Steve Levine takes over at Campbell after 35 years as the only coach in the history of Tewksbury (Mass.) High School, while new Nashua North coach Jack Belcher has extensive coaching experience, most of it in the Ocala, Fla., area.
Departing after 19 years, two state titles and five final appearances at Bishop Guertin is Tony Bellinger, who once played professionally in the North American Soccer League. Taking his place, former University of Rhode Island standout Pat Mulcahy, went on to play professionally with both the New England Revolution and Phantoms of New Hampshire.
Jeff Blackwell is the new coach at Alvirne. He was the girls’ junior varsity coach last year, but has experience coaching boys at the club level, including a number of his current player.
Meanwhile, the area’s youngest coaches are racking up years of experience. Steve Martus, who guided Wilton-Lyndeborough to its first state title in 48 years last fall, is celebrating his fifth season at the helm although he’s only 26.
Carvalho, only 23 when he took over at Nashua North last fall, already has his second varsity job.
The local boys coach will the longest tenure now is Souhegan’s Steve Saxe, who is entering his 16th season with the Sabers.
Who has the best crack at a championship this fall? It has to be Wilton, with seven returning starters from its championship team, including 28-goal scorer Adam Edmunds and midfield standout Stephen Taliadoros.
The dominant powers entering the Div. II season are six-time defending champion Hanover and Bedford. Both schools will move up to Div. I next year.
Manchester Central, which has appeared in the finals the last two years – winning it all in 2009 – could be the team to beat in Div. I. But defending champion Pinkerton, winner of two of the last three finals, won’t give up the crown easily and Exeter is always in the running.
Campbell will be looking to get back into contention in Div. III, which has been dominated in recent years by Hopkinton and Gilford. For Gilford it was the 14th title and it trails only Hanover (17) on the all-time list.
