HUDSON – The Hollis Brookline High School boys tennis team has enjoyed a lot of success the last two season as one of the best programs in Division II.

There’s just one thing the Cavaliers have not been able to do:

Beat Goffstown.

Of course, no one really has, but not many have been as good as HB. But the Cavs have gone 0-6 vs.the Grizzlies, including Thursday’s Division II championship match at the Alvirne High School courts, a 6-3 Grizzlies victory.

“They were just the better team today,” Cavs coach Celestino Eddie Sepulveda III said. “Goffstown, all credit to them, now on I think a 36-0 run (34-0), credit to them for being able to uphold that record.They just came out top to the bottom of the lineup today and outplayed our players.”

It was that simple. The match was decided before it even went to doubles, and that’s not what the Cavs had in mind, especially after staying with Goffstown 5-4 right before the April break.

“It’s a credit to the kids,” Goffstown coach Gary Walsh said. “Our kids don’t give up. Some of them are three sport athletes and they grind. That’s what we wanted to do today, with the heat.

“Nothing against Hollis Brookline, a very good team and we have a lot of respect for them, but they play their home matches indoors (at Longwood Tennis in Nashua), so playing outdoors I think was a plus for our team.”

There were two close singles matches,the first two atop the ladder, and both were 8-6. Goffstown’s No. 1 Tyler Dionne edge HB’s Arjun Inakollu and HB’s John Torpey, with the other five all done, beat Goffstown’s Coen Soucy 8-6. In that one, Torpey rallied from a 5-2 deficit.

The others? Not too tight. Liam O’Brien blanked HB’s Samuel Anthony 8-0 at No. 3, Peyton Campbell beat Sam Pistor 8-2 at No. 4; Cole Osburn blanked Greyson McSeveney 8-0 at No. 5, and Skylar Lyman downed Eli Mazzola at No. 6, 8-4.

In the doubles matches, with subs galore, Inakollu/Anthony fell to Campbell/Lyman 8-4, but HB took the next two with Torpey/Pistor beating Troy Napiarkoski. Avery Barlusick 8-0 and a sub team of Dylan Legrow/Aidan Curley topping Nathan Mailieux/Brendon Neal 8-3.

But again, it’s been a good, successful run for the Cavs, a team with eight seniors.

“I’m extremely proud of this group of boys, these student athletes,” Sepulveda said. “And the four-year journey we’ve been on. I started out at Hollis Brookline as an assistant coach and have been fortunate enough to lead these boys to a quarterfinal, to a semifinal and now two finals. Couldn’t be prouder of them, we leave today with our heads held high. We played our best.”

The bottom line? It just seemed as though the Grizzlies got off the bus ready to take it to whomever they were going to play and in no way would they accept losing.

“That’s the mentality the kids had today,” Walsh said.

And that’s tough for anyone to beat.
