UNH Roundup: Wildcats suffer hoop, hockey losses

DURHAM – Redshirt sophomore forward Belal El Shakery secured a double-double by scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team’s 61-58 loss against the University of Maine in Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman guard Tyler Bike of Merrimack netted a team-high 15 points with four 3-pointers. Junior forward Davide Poser scored 11 points and sophomore forward John Squire grabbed nine rebounds.
Maine’s Logan Carey and Mekhi Gray both scored 16 points. Ace Flagg had 15 points.
The Wildcats had a 58-55 lead with 2:24 to go but Maine ended the game on a 6-0 run to get the win.
UNH moves to 8-18 overall and 4-9 America East. Maine is now 7-21, 5-8 AE.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
MAINE 67, UNH 61
Junior guard Eva DeChent scored a team-high 26 points but the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team was edged in the Border Battle at Memorial Gym.
DeChent became the 22nd player in UNH program history to score 1,000 points with her 14th point of the game, which was scored on a layup at 2:59 of the second quarter. She has 1,058 career points, including 1,012 in 57 games as a Wildcat.
Grad student guard Kenzie Matulonis and junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh both finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists. Maine was led by Adrianna Smith’s double-double of 35 points and 14 rebounds.
Maine went on a 15-0 run to transform a nine-point deficit (54-45 at 8:49) into a six-point lead (60-54 at 3:30).
UNH moves to 8-19 overall and 2-12 in America East. Maine improves to 15-12, 10-4.
UNH returns to action Thursday vs. Binghamton University for the conference’s Spread Respect initiative.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
VERMONT 6, UNH 5 (OT)
DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey fell late to Vermont (15-16-5, 10-12-2 HEA) at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex in OT.
Vermont claimed the extra league point with 3:46 left to play in overtime, when Oona Havana struck for her third goal of the game.
The Catamounts opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the first period, when Lauren O’Hara collected the puck in front, firing past Noemi Martinez for the quick 1-0 advantage.
Just 53 seconds later, the Wildcats responded, when Nina Rossiforced a turnover in the Vermont zone, pulling a move in front of Lily Prendergast before beating her on a backhanded shot to make it 1-1.
Vermont netted a pair of scores midway through the period, with goals at 7:26 and 8:43 pushing the Catamounts ahead 3-1 after one.
New Hampshire cut the deficit back down to a single goal just 3:51 into the second period, when Alex Therien won the race to the puck, skating through the Vermont zone and landing a backhanded shot on net, beating Prendergast for her first collegiate goal.
Vermont regained their lead midway through the second period with a pair of scores in a 48 second span, putting the Catamounts up 5-2.
With just under five minutes left in the frame, Addison Finn took a feed from Nina Rossi in the right face-off dot, firing on net for her second goal of the year and cutting the lead back down to a pair.
Midway through the third, Courtney Lilley fired a try on net, collecting her own rebound in front and beating Prendergast for her second score of the year, making it a 5-4 game.
With just under three minutes left to play, Kelly Harty saved the puck from leaving the zone before finding Addison Spitz in the corner, who fed a pass back to Harty, who then fired on net for the equalizer.
The Wildcats next visit Holy Cross (18-12-3, 10-11-3 HEA) on Saturday, Feb. 28 in the Hockey East quarterfinals.
