Rivier Roundup: Baguidy hits 1,000; women’s hockey wins

NASHUA – The Rivier men’s basketball team fell to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents Saint Joseph (Conn.) (USJ), 82-56, Saturday afternoon at the Muldoon Center, but longtime Raider point guard Robinsen Baguidy eclipsed the career 1,000 point mark.
With the loss, the Raiders fell to 10-10 (4-4 GNAC), while the Blue Jays improved to 14-6 (7-0 GNAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rivier opened the contest with a 3-2 lead after a second chance three pointer from sophomore Steph Barnes.Senior Izaiah Shaw-Glen followed with a tip-in layup off an offensive rebound to push the Raiders back in front, 5-4.
USJ countered with a 7-1 run behind strong defense and interior scoring, building an 11-6 advantage with just over 12 minutes to play in the opening half.
Barns finished the half strong, scoring the final four points for the Raiders, trimming the deficit to 35-22. The Blue Jays opened the second with the same energy they had in the first half, stretching the lead to 17 in the opening three minutes.
Shaw-Glen responded with finishes in the paint (time), but USJ’s continued to have success in transition to increase their lead to 27 with 4:13 remaining.
With 4:01 on the clock, senior Baguidy drew a foul and split his free throws to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone.
The Raiders put recorded eight points in the final three minutes, including a three from first-year Elijah Farrell, but the deficit was too large and USJ secured the win 82-56
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
Shaw-Glen and Baguidy led the team with 12 points each…Barnes and senior Jamari Williams followed close behind with 10 points each, while Williams added a game-high 12 rebounds…First-year Daylen Dalcour finished with 11 rebounds, six of them on the offensive end.
UP NEXT
The Raiders return to play next Saturday, Feb. 7 for a matchup with conference opponents Albertus Magnus. The opening tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletics Center.
WOMENS BASETBALL
SAINT JOSEPH’S 80, RIVIER 59
With the conference loss at the Muldoon Center, the Raiders dropped to 2-18 (2-5 GNAC), while the Blue Jays improved to 7-13 (5-2 GNAC).
USJ recorded the first basket of the contest, but junior Emily Coleman answered with a jump shot before sophomore Gianna Donato converted a layup off a turnover to go up 4-2. The Blue Jays flipped a switch after tying up the game 4-4, going on a 18-5 run over a stretch of 7:49 to take a 22-9 lead after one.
Coleman sparked an 8-4 run by converting a jump shot off a feed from junior Erika Fantauzzi, before Donato and sophomore Sydney Perry capped off the run with interior scoring. USJ began to pull ahead once again, eventually taking a 36-19 lead on the back of a three pointer.
First-year Madi Ricker recorded all four points for the Raiders down the stretch, however the Blue Jays took a 40-23 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, both teams traded scores with the Blue Jays holding a slight edge in third quarter scoring, 10-7. Each team continued to trade baskets until the final 2:10 of the frame as USJ closed out the third quarter with a 7-3 run to take a 59-35 lead.
The Raiders had their best quarter in the fourth, outscoring the Blue Jays 24-21 on 67% shooting from the field.
Donato and graduate student Juju Nealy led the team with a combined seven points in the first half of the final quarter.
The Raiders continued to chip away in the final five minutes, closing out the contest on a 15-10 stretch with Coleman and Perry leading the charge offensively however USJ secured the 80-59 win from the free throw line.
Coleman led the team with a double-double, finishing with a career-best 14 points and a tied career-best 12 rebounds. Perry finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, followed by Donato with 11 points, and Nealy with 10.
The Raiders return to action next Saturday for a 1 p.m. road GNAC matchup with Albertus Magnus.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
RIVIER 5, FRAMINGHAM STATE 2
The Rivier women’s ice hockey charged past Framingham State in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play at Conway Arena.
With the result, the Raiders improved to 12-6-0 (7-2-0 MASCAC), while the Rams dropped to 2-13-1 (1-6-0 MASCAC).
First-year Chloe Bryda opened scoring for the Raiders at the 10:40 mark with the assist awarded to classmate Marina Bassett.
The Rams found the tying tally 30 seconds into the second frame.
Senior Olivia Schultz capitalized on the power play at 7:01, finishing a setup from Bryda to restore the Raiders’ lead, 2-1.
Framingham struck again eight minutes later to level the score.
The Raiders outshot the Rams 6-3 over the final three minutes of play but were unable to capitalize, sending the game into the final frame knotted 2-2.
Sophomore Lillian Wojcicki sparked the Raiders’ offense, burying a rebound 34 seconds in to regain the lead.
At the 4:58 mark, first-year Lexi Davies converted on the power play, linking up with senior Jessica Driscoll to put Rivier up a pair, 4-2.
Bryda danced past two defenders and fired home her second of the night at 7:51 to cap the scoring.
Rivier outshot Framingham 50-35.Bryda paced the offense with two goals and an assist, tying Wojcicki for the team high with seven shots.
The Raiders controlled faceoffs 32-23., while junior goalie Taylor Bruno turned aside 33 shots. Schultz led the Raiders with two blocked shots.
The Raiders return to action on Friday, February 6, for a MASCAC match-up with Salem State at Rockett Arena at 6 p.m.
MEN’S HOCKEY
FITCHBURG STATE 7, RIVIER 1
The Rivier men’s ice hockey team fell to Fitchburg St. 7-1 in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play on Saturday evening at the Wallace Civic Center.
With the result, the Raiders moved to 2-16-1 (2-6-0 MASCAC), while the Falcons moved to 13-5-0 (6-1-0 MASCAC).
Fitchburg St. struck twice in the opening three minutes of the first period and extended the lead to three at the 10:28 mark.
The Falcons knocked in the loan goal of the second frame to extend their lead to four.
Fitchburg St. recorded three more tallies, including a power-play goal, over a three-minute span.
Sophomore Anthony Dalessio scored the lone goal for Rivier on a feed from junior Shawn Golden at 13:03 in the third.
Fitchburg St. continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone, but were unable to add one more score, sealing the 7-1 win.
The Falcons outshot the Raiders 45-26, while sophomore Josh Kirton made 38 saves. First-year Brogan Andrus recorded a team high five shots on net.
The Raiders continue their road stint at Salem St. on Thursdayfor more MASCAC action at Rockett Arena. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
