UNH Roundup: Hoop sweeps UAlbany, split for hockey
DURHAM – Junior guard KiJan Robinson scored 17 points to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team to an 80-72 victory against UAlbany at Lundholm Gym on Saturday and give the Wildcats a third consecutive win.
Junior guard Jack Graham recorded 15 points on five made 3-pointers and junior guard Comeh Emuobor tallied 13 points. Graham finished with a team-high five rebounds.
Junior forward Belal El Shakery shot 100% from the floor for 10 points and junior forward Davide Poser sank four 3-pointers for 12 points. Freshman guard Tyler Bike of Merrimack tallied 11 points to mark six UNH Wildcats in double digits.
UAlbany’s leading scorer was Miles Rose with 20 points. Amir Lindsey had 16 points and six rebounds.
UNH improved to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in America East while UAlbany moved to 7-14 overall, 3-3 AE.
UNH tips off against UMass Lowell on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lundholm Gym.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
UNH 56, UALBANY 51.
Junior guard Eva DeChent scored a game-high 17 points to lead an America East conference road win at Broadview Center.
DeChent was an efficient 7 of 11 shooting for the floor and was a perfect 2-for-2 at the foul line before fouling out with 2:26 to play and UNH holding a 56-48 lead.
Senior guard Camryn Fauria scored 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range, and had five rebounds. Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five steals and an assist while senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat scored eight points and blocked two shots.
UAlbany was led offensively by Delanie Hill (15 points) and Amaya Stewart (14). UNH improves to 7-13 overall and 1-6 in America East while UAlbany is now 11-9, 1-6.
UNH is back on the road Thursday at UMass Lowell.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
UNH 6, BOSTON COLLEGE 2
The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team handled business against Boston College (11-14-1, 9-6-1 HEA) on Saturday at the Conte Forum.,
The Wildcats broke open the scoring early in the first period, when Danika Botterill poked a loose puck to Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) in the slot, who fired past Boston College’s Grace Campbell for the 1-0 advantage.
New Hampshire doubled their advantage 2:18 later on a power-play strike from Nina Rossi, who skated into the slot with the puck before firing through traffic to make it a 2-0 game.
UNH connected again on special teams 2:34 after Rossi’s goal, when Alyson Hush found Sadie Makokis who fired on net from the point, beating Campbell to give the ‘Cats the 3-0 edge through 20 minutes.
Boston College cut into the Wildcats’ three-goal lead 6:47 into the middle period, when Kate Ham cleaned up on a rebound, slipping the puck past the defense while on the power-play to make it 3-1.
The Eagles collected their second goal of the period 6:22 later, when the puck deflected off a New Hampshire skate before landing at the stick of Madelyn Murphy, who fired past the defense from the left-side face-off dot to cut the deficit to a single goal.
New Hampshire regained their two-goal advantage just 25 seconds later, when Makokis recovered the puck in the Wildcats’ zone before finding Botterill skating through the neutral zone, who beat the defense and fired past Campbell blocker-side for the 4-2 lead.
With a Boston College player in the box for a major penalty, the Wildcats’ power-play unit got back to work midway through the third period, when Kelly Harty caught a piece of a try from Aurora Kahlert, deflecting past Campbell to give UNH the 5-2 edge.
With 4:10 left to play in the game, Rossi found her second goal of the game after forcing a turnover deep in the Eagles’ zone, firing on the unguarded net to bring about the final 6-2 score.
MEN’S HOCKEY
BOSTON COLLEGE 3, UNH 0
Will Vote recorded a hat-trick for the Eagles as the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team fell to No. 14 Boston College in front of a sold-out crowd in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex in Hockey East action.
The Wildcats fall to 11-12-0 (5-8-0 Hockey East), while the Eagles improve to 13-8-1 (9-5-0 Hockey East).
Next up for the Wildcats will be a home-and-home series with Merrimack on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31 at 7 p.m. Friday is at Lawler Rink on ESPN+, while the contest on Saturday is at the Whitt.
Senior goalie Kyle Chauvette of Goffstown tallied 14 saves, while Louka Cloutier made 29 saves for the Eagles.
