Here’s your Fall Sports Guide for September-October
Well, here we are, the summer is unofficially over as Labor Day Weekend is here.
That means it’s unofficially fall, and you will need a guide as a sports fan as to where to go and what to see locally, etc.
Here’s just a few key dates for September-October to keep in mind. November is a bigger deal with tournaments, etc., so we’ll give you those right around Halloween:
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 6
It’s early in the season, but this one should be interesting as the Hollis Brookline girls volleyball team travels to Bedford. What’s the big deal, you ask? Well, the Cavs have lost to the Bulldogs in the last three Division I state championship matches. Could be fun.
Meanwhile, at Stellos Stadium, the Bishop Guertin and Nashua South girls soccer teams tangle. Both have had good starts to the season and may be the area’s two best Division I teams.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 10
The New England Patriots open their season vs. the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium, but that is actually going to be overshadowed by a special guest: a guy named Brady, who is being honored by his former team. We bet Bill Belichick loves that distraction, right?
TUESDAY, SEPT. 12
Lock the doors, bolt the windows, hide the women, children and elderly. The Hanover Bears boys soccer team, which pasted Nashua North 5-0 the other day, is back in town at Stellos to face the Nashua team they really hate – Nashua South, at 6 p.m. The Panthers have beaten Da Bears in the last two Division I title games, so watch out.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 16
It’s the first big intra-city football game of the Division I season as Bishop Guertin will host Nashua North. The two teams were one-two in the West Conference last year and played a classic in 2022 with North rallying in the last few minutes. We’ll see how both teams shape up for this one, as first year BG coach Anthony Nalen gets introduced to his first local rivalry.
MONDAY, SEPT. 18 THROUGH FRIDAY, SEPT. 22
Speaking of rivalry, what could take up five days and nights? C’mon, you know – the Nashua High School North-South Battle of the Bridge. The biggies: Field hockey on Monday, boys and girls soccer on Tuesday, girls volleyball on Wednesday, and the big football game on Friday night. Think the Panthers may be thinking about that 47-0 loss from a year ago?
SUNDAY, SEPT. 24
That weekend winds up with a verrrrry interesting New England Patriots contest: Pats at New York Jets. Hello, Aaron Rodgers, glad to meet you.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 28
This is high school cross country’s biggest day – the Division Meets at Manchester’s Derryfield Park. You can bet there will be a local team with a chance at some hardware.
SUNDAY, OCT. 1
The Patriots will be at Dallas, and any trip to face the Cowboys is usually an event. It’s still early in the season, so it’s not a crucial, crucial game, and any time these two meet we always think the real matchup is Robert Kraft vs. Jerry Jones.
TUESDAY, OCT. 10
Fore! It’s the NHIAA Divison I and II golf team championships, with the Division I tourney at Canterbury, CC, and Divison II at Breakfast Hill. BG would love to get back to the tourney, as would the other two Nashua teams after missing it last year.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11
What’s Bruin? The B’s return from when we saw them last, languishing in stunning playoff loss to Florida, to open the 2023-24 regular season at TD Garden vs. the Chicago Blackhawks. No Bergeron, no Krejci, and most likely no regular season record – and no Stanley Cup.
THURSDAY, OCT. 19
How about some local college soccer? Rivier hosts Plymouth State at 3 p.m. at Joanne Merrill Field. The Raiders, who had a ton of freshmen a couple of years ago, should be coming of age for head coach Hayden Barbosa. This could be a good take.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 25
The Boston Celtics are back, as they open up the season at the New York Knicks. Will Kristaps Porzingis be around to face his former team, or will his foot woes that kept him out of the FIBA World Cup extend to the NBA regular season?
FRIDAY, OCT. 27
It’s the other Nashua-BG football game, Nashua South hosting the Cardinals at Stellos Stadium. Will either team be in contenion? We’ll probably get an idea in a few weeks.
SATURDAY, OCT. 28
The World Series begins. The Red Sox won’t be there, we pretty much can figure that. Who will? The playoffs are a crapshoot, but we’ll go with Dodgers vs. Rangers. Ah why not.
Also, it’s the Rivier University men’s hockey team’s second game of the season at Conway Arena, but with a special twist: Nashua Youth Hockey Night. You can feel the temperatures dropping, can’t you.
SUNDAY, OCT. 29
The NHIAA field hockey championships, three divisions all being played at Bedford High School. Souhegan would love to be there, Division II runnerup in three of the last four seasons. So would Bishop Guertin in Division I. A day for those who love this sport, for sure.
Those are just a few of the big dates you can enjoy in the next couple of months. And then we fall back with the clocks and …. Let’s not think about it. It’s still only Labor Day.
