The Nashua Silver Knights will say good-bye to Holman Stadium and their fans today, and they hope to be saving their best for last.
Nashua (27-36) has now won three in a row after beating New Britain 2-1 on Wednesday night, the difference being Jackson Linn’s solo homer on a 1-0 pitch in the top of the fourth to snap a 1-1 tie. It was Linn’s third homer of the season.
Nashua will host Brockton today in a doubleheader (seven innings each) beginning at 3 p.m. It will wrap up a season that is expected to be the first non-playoff year in the team’s 11-year history. The Knights gave themselves a chance with a recent eight game winning streak, but the first-place Vermont Starfires beat them three straight last weekend to basically seal Nashua’s non-playoff fate.
The Silver Knights still trail fourth place Worcester (30-33) by three in the loss column, and even though they close out the regular season at the Bravehearts on Friday night, it would be a tall task.
John Mead’s solo homer in the top of the second gave Nashua a 1-0 lead before New Britain tied it in the bottom of the third off Noah Wachter, who fanned five in 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits while walking three.
The win went to reliever Nick Remy, who tossed three innings of hitless, scoreless relief, striking out four and walking one. George Welch and L.T. Pare closed it out, with Pare picking up the save.
If they can’t make the playoffs, the goal now for the Silver Knights would be to avoid finishing in last place. Right now the Bees (25-37) occupy that spot, thanks in part to Nashua’s recent dominance over them.
