TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. – Last March, the Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team suffered a heartbreaking loss in an all-time classic of a Division I championship game when Concord prevailed in a quadruple overtime thriller to claim the title.

Bishop Guertin then came up short when the teams met three weeks ago, but the Cardinals were finally able to savor a win against their rival and end Concord’s undefeated season in the process.

After falling into an early two-goal deficit, Bishop Guertin rallied and senior Jordan O’Hearn’s go-ahead goal late in the second period helped propel the Cardinals to a 4-2 victory inside Skate 3 Arena.

“It sucks losing to them in the championship, we fought hard that game in a game that’s going to go down in history,” O’Hearn said. “But the boys were rattled up today and we wanted to get our get back because that’s something you don’t want to lose. We were all fired up before the game and we came out with it and you saw the outcome.”

Concord (11-1) tied last year’s title game with 33.7 seconds left in regulation before Rowan Arndt’s goal in the fourth overtime ended the longest championship game in state history for a 2-1 Concord win.

Bishop Guertin (7-3) dropped a 4-3 decision at Concord in the team’s first matchup this season on Jan. 17.

“It’s a great win, we’ve been playing against them and it’s always been a great rival,” Bishop Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. “We like playing with one another. It’s fun.”

Bishop Guertin sophomore goalie Nico Scaparotti planned to start the game but his mask broke during warmups. Freshman backup Brody Fallon was thrusted into action and Concord took advantage with Nolan Walsh’s goal 14 seconds into the game.

Scaparotti entered the game after fixing his mask and gave up a goal to Chad LaRiviere for a 2-0 lead with 5:43 left in the first period. Scaparotti settled down after that and made 26 saves.

“I saw we were down 1-0 and I said ‘I’ve got to get back out there’,” Scaparotti said. “Then we got down 2-0, but it was OK. I felt confident. I came back into the locker room, got my snack, got my drink and went out back out there in the third period and said we’re going to win this game.”

Bishop Guertin stormed back to even the game at 2-2 late in the first period on goals by Owen Murphy and Gavin Santos. Assists on those went to Jason Schultz and Murphy.

O’Hearn nearly gave the Cardinals a lead early in the second period when his slapshot hit the crossbar.

He bided his time and capitalized on an opportunity when he beat Concord goalie Carter Heise (27 saves) to give Bishop Guertin 3-2 lead with 1:26 remaining in the second. Jack Stone and Cam Vaillancort recorded the assists.

“I saw the 3-on-1, their defense kind of dropped early and I kept looking to the winger and their goalie was kind of thrown off by that,” O’Hearn said. “I just picked the low side because he was looking for the pass.”

Concord’s Chad LaRiviere and Bishop Guerttin’s Cam Auger battle for the puck during the first period of Bishop Guertin’s 4-2 win on Wednesday.

Santos netted his second goal to give Bishop Guertin a 4-2 cushion with 10:36 left in regulation on a nice feed from Anthony Dobrutchi, his second assist of the game.. The Cardinals then killed off a penalty and protected their end of the ice to seal the win.

Scaparotti was thrilled to get his first win in the rivalry after the Pelham resident transferred from Central Catholic in Lawrence, Mass.

“Last game it was a tough loss and their student section was crazy and kind of got in my head,” Scaparotti said. “This time, my student section was loud and I said we’re not losing this game after last time.”
