HS Tourney Roundup: Cards fall to Smithfield; Broncos win

The Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team dropped the first game of the Prout School Holiday tournament in Providence, R.I. on Thursday night, 3-1 at the hands of Smithfield, R.I.

The Cards gave up a goal in each period, trailing 3-0 before Noah Cordiero scored on the power play, assisted by James Mantone at 10:29 of the third period.

Luke Bettencourt had 22 saves for the Cards, who outshot Smithfield 29-25.

Guertin will now take on Pilgrim High School of Warwick, R.I. tonight at 8 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ALVIRNE 65, AUGUST MARTIN 46

Garrett Hall and Sammy DeWitt were a one-two punch for the Broncos on the first night of the Portland Holiday Hoops Showcase Tourney at the Portland (Me.) Expo.

Hall and DeWitt had nine each in a 21-point second quarter for the Broncos, as they broke the game open during that span, leading August Martin of Rochdale, N.Y. 33-17 at the half.

DeWitt had five 3-pointers for Alvirne, which now takes on Lincoln (Me.) Academy today at 1 p.m. on the second day of the three-day event.

NASHUA HOLIDAY TOURNEY TODAY

Nashua South’s Belanger Gym is the place to be today for local high school basketball fans for Day 1 of the boys and girls Nashua Holiday Basketball Tourney.

South will take on Milford at noon in the girls semis, with Nashua North vs. Alvirne to follow at 1:30. In the boys semis, North takes on Souhegan at 3 p.m. with South facing Milford at 4:30.

CORRECTION

It was incorrectly reported both in print and on line that the Hollis Brookline girls basketball team would be playing in the Derryfield School Cougar Classic. They will not; HB will stay home for the holidays, taking the time off from games.
