SEPTEMBER: What you can look for on sports calendar

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 1, 2026

September’s now here, so raise a glass and give a cheer.

Well, almost. It means waaaay earlier sunsets, cooler temps on the way, etc.

But it also means the start of football, the end of regular season baseball, and the start of camps for hoop and hockey, and some great high school matchups – including the Battle of the Bridge.

So here’s you September Guide:

TUESDAY, SEPT. 1 (Today)

We start the month off with a bang – the rematch of last year’s epic Nashua High School South-Bishop Guertin boys soccer title game. The Panthers will have most of those players who fell 1-0 in the classic OT game, while the Cards will try to replace some key graduated players. Game time is 6 p.m. at Stellos and yes, Nashua ETV will be there. The girls teams also clash at 4, and that should be a good one as well.

Also locally Rivier University opens its fall season Tuesday as well, with the Raider mens soccer team at Fitchburg State, field hockey home vs. Keene State (5 p.m.) and women’s volleyball at Johnson & Wales at 6. Women’s soccer, picked No. 1 in the GNAC preseason poll, starts the next day at Endicott College.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 2

Good grief, can we get a bigger first full week of high school games: Head indoors to the Bishop Guertin Colligadome for the best two local programs in the area from a year ago, Nashua North vs.BG at 6:30 p.m. It will be the season opener for both. Say hi to the Nashua ETV crew on the stage.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 3

You may see another good all-local girls soccer battle when Hollis Brookline, finalists the last three seasons with two Division II titles, vs. local rival Souhegan, up on the hill at HB at 6:30 p.m. Check it out.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 4

The day many have been waiting for: the start of high school football. And it opens with a big intra-city clash at Stellos Stadium: Nashua North hosting Bishop Guertin at 6:30 p.m. Next weekend you’ll have all your preview info, including team photos, schedules etc. in the Sunday Telegraph to use as a guide the rest of the season.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 9

Well, we already know this one, having marked it on the calendar since it was announced early this past May, right? It’s the long awaited New England Patriots season opener at Seattle, in a Super Bowl rematch vs. the Seahawks. Life in New England will shut down this night, the roads will be empty. Game time is 8:20 p.m. on NBC.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 10

A special Thursday Night Football edition with Exeter at Bishop Guertin. Why Thursday? Football officials always like that, but also it’s the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah the next night, and the Blue Hawks usually honor this holiday with no games. So Thursday it is at Stellos, with a different game time of 7 p.m. This is a battle of potential title contenders, at least playoff teams, and it’s a great early season test for both.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 11

Always day to remember, in fact it will be 25 years since the tragic day. Football will indeed be played at Stellos, with Nashua South having its home opener vs. Merrimack. That’s always a great all-local battle.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 16

Ready for some, uh, hockey? This is the first day of Boston Bruins training camp at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton. Oh, remember those good ol’ just-after-Labor Day camp openers in Wilmington? Times have changed.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 18

This is the start of a three-game Red Sox weekend series at Tampa, and that could be a biggie for both teams, in terms of standings, etc. Check out the standings going in, see if the Red Sox are close to the current division leading Rays, or the Yankees in the Wild Card standings. As of this writing it woud be Boston at New York again in the first round of the playoffs, but that could always change.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY, SEPT. 19-20

Summer’s not over yet, because this is the annual Nashua City Golf Tournament, with the tourney at Nashua Country Club. There is a new professional division, up to 12. Jack Fitzgerald is the main division defending tourney champion, while Eric McCoy won last year’s Senior Division.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 20

Welcome to Gillette Stadium and the New England Patriots home opener, with Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers the invited guests for a 1 p.m. game. Finally, real football at Gillette.Adjust your driving plans accordingly, it won’t be the breeze along Route 1 that we usually see in the preseason.

MONDAY-WEDNESDAY SEPT. 21-23

Guess what? It’s already Battle of the Bridge Week: The key varsity games start with Nashua North-South field hockey on Monday at Stellos at 6, then the North-South boy-girl soccer doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 and 6, then the girls volleyball match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 25

Well, you know what this is:the annual North-South football games at Stellos at 6:30 p.m. This coud be an interesting one; North is the younger of the two squads, so we’ll see. Biggest and most well-attended of all the regular season events at Stellos, for sure.

MONDAY, SEPT. 28

It will be the official opening of Celtics training camp at the Auerbach Center in Brighton, Mass.with the team’s annual Media Day. Get ready, Jayson Tatum, you’ll be bombarded with Jaylen Brown questions. It will be an interesting feeling without Brown there. He’ll be at Philly’s Media Day, which will likely be the same day. Oh boy.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 29

Can you believe the Major League Baseball playoffs are here already, with postseason baseball in September? Sox at Yankees? Or Yankees at Sox? Or one of them vs.Tampa? It’s such a weak American League, but in MLB’s post season anything can happen. The Wild Card series in both leagues will take place for the week and the Divison Series starting over that upcoming weekend on Oct.3. Fun times.

That’s some September, eh?
