HS Hoop Roundup: Opening Night wins for South, BG

There were no opening night jitters for area high school basketball teams on Friday.

The Nashua South boys, for example, were up 30-plus points after three quarters at Goffstown. The Merrimack boys played a thrilling triple OT game at Keene. The Bishop Guertin girl survived a missed shot at the buzzer to pull out a big win at Concord Christina. And the Hollis Brookline girls rallied from 11 down. And it goes on and on, so read on:

BOYS BASKETBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 74, GOFFSTOWN 60

Josh Caruso put up 30 points in just two-and-a-half quarters as the Panthers win over the Grizzlies. Daniel Karavanic added nine points as 13 players filled up the box score for the Panthers, who were up 33 points to start the fourth quarter.

Josh Tripp added 10 rebonds for South, which visits Pinkerton on Monday.

BISHOP GUERTIN 78, CONCORD 53

The Cardinals start the season with a dominant win on the road. Luca Fabrizio and Eli Youssef scored 19 and 11 points respectively. BG hosts Portsmouth on Tuesday

KEENE 72, MERRIMACK 68 (3 OT)

The Tomahawks lost the war, but put up a good battle after being down by 10 with five minutes left in regulation.

Mike Flerra had a team high 20 points with six 3-pointers while also holding Keene’s All-State player Fitch Hennessy to just six points.

Ryan Elliot had 15 and Noah Morrison added 13, but Keene’s Javon Messiah knocked down a 3-pointer to force the third overtime.

Merrimack hosts Timberlane on Monday.

OYSTER RIVER 68, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 64

James Arthur tallied 23 points including seven three-pointers, but the Cavs couldn’t come home with a win. Yarie Ramas and Alton Williams scored 12 and eight points respectively. HB hosts Pelham on Monday.

SOUHEGAN 65, LACONIA 60

After being down by 19 at halftime, the Sabers came storming back to pick up the win. Wes Hickman led the way with 33 points and Drew Reagan had 15. Souhegan hosts Bow on Tuesday.

CAMPBELL 79, FALL MOUNTAIN 47

Cayden DeLeon was all over the court recording 26 points and eight steals in the Cougars season opening win. Jack Breton (16 points, eight rebounds) and Logan Rice (14 points, nine rebounds) added to the dominance on offense. Campbell hosts Derryfield on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 47, GOFFSTOWN 44

Nicole DeJesus had a great performance collecting 19 points in the Panthers win. Amber Wong scored eight points with Brooke Berger and Nitzann Alkalay had seven apiece. South hosts Pinkerton on Monday.

BISHOP GUERTIN 38, CONCORD CHRISTIAN 36

The visiting Cardinals squeak by Concord Christian after the hosts missed a shot at the buzzer. Maddie Long recorded nine points, Maggie Gallagher had six and Holly Dufoe had five.

BG is off until it visits Bedford next Friday.

PINKERTON 72, NASHUA NORTH 40

The Titans had trouble controlling the Astros resulting in a loss. Lily Small tallied 14 points and Madelyn Tino had 12. North hosts Bedford on Monday.

ALVIRNE 73, MANCHESTER MEMORIAL 41

The Broncos outpaced Memorial on Friday night. Ella Hartson scored 19 points with Courtney Anderson adding 12. Alvirne hosts Goffstown on Tuesday.

KEENE 60, MERRIMACK 46

The Tomahawks played hard in their opener but came up short vs. the Blackbirds. Natalia Maglio led the way with nine points while Avary Cruz and Kelsey Ledoux each had seven.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 50, OYSTER RIVER 47

The Cavs pick up the home opening win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd against Oyster River, rallying from 11 down.

Ana O’Donnell led the team with 13 points, Emily Tebbetts scored 12 and Sam Disco had eight including two big three-pointers in the fourth.

Brooke Bouchard and Ysabel Ramas held down the fort on defense for HB, which visits Pelham on Tuesday.

MILFORD 52, JOHN STARK 30

The Spartans outscored their opponent 23-4 in the third quarter and didn’t look back. Lexi Bausha had a team high 18 points, Avery Fuller added 12 points and six blocks, Claire Cote scored 11 and Ellianna Nassy chipped in seven. Milford visits Kingswood on December 20.

LACONIA 52, SOUHEGAN 34

The Sabers open their season with a loss on their home court. Zofia Rosenfield (eight points, six rebounds), Phoebe Faucher (six points, five rebounds), Kayden Merriam (five points) and Lanai Hickman played well for the locals. Souhegan visits Bow on Tuesday.

WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 41, LISBON 11

Maddy Labrecque put up 16 points in the box score in the Warriors dominant win. Kelsey Crouse and Cailin Swett added 12 and nine points respectively. WLC visits Mount Royal on Tuesday.

FALL MOUNTAIN 50, CAMPBELL 16

The Cougars suffered a tough opener, scoring single digits in each quarter, trailing 27-8 at the half. They were led by Kenzie Ripley with seven points.
