HOLLIS – Both the Hollis Brookline and Alvirne High School boys lacrosse teams got something out of their physical matchup on Tuesday.

It’s just that the Cavaliers got just a little more – a win to improve to 4-1, and another goalie.

HB, which led 6-5 at the half, pulled away in the third quarter and then held on to beat Alvirne 12-10 in an all-local Division II contest.

The Cavs’ Luke Kinney started his first game ever in goal and had eight saves, but six big ones in the second half.

“First game ever playing goalie, stepped in there, and a big reason why we won is because of him,” HB coach Mac Martin said of Kinney, who got some defensive help from Cayden Emmons, Pat Masoni and Rudy Rosa.

Ben Dufoe led the Cavs with five goals and an assist, while J.P. Torgerson had two goals and two assists. Connor Cook and Bennett Torgersen each had two goals while Colin Magnuszewski had a goal and two assists.

“A slow start today, but we continued to do what we had to do and got the win,” Martin said. “That’s all that matters.”

Alvirne (3-2) got five goals from Jon Sanatana and three from Cedrik Beaulieu. Sam Fortin and Ryan Tobin had single goals while Chris Darbe added two assists. Beaulieu and Fortin scored twice five seconds apart to make it interesting in the final two minutes.

The Cavs peppered Alvirne goalie Ayden Kelly, but he was up to the task with 20 saves.

“Hollis has some really good players, and we had to come up with a game plan for them,” Alvirne coach Cam Debrusk said. “At a certain point we didn’t make an adjustment quick enough, and it got away from us.”

But the thing for the Broncos? They stayed with it.

“One of the things I’ll always appreciate is these guys will never quit, and always fight until the last horn,” Debrusk said. “It didn’t go our way, but we’ll get one, and one of these will go our way.”
