Local Roundup: Elm Street wins City crowns; BG skaters on top

It won’t exist a year from now, but Nashua’s Elm Street Junior High is certainly going out in style when it comes to basketball.

The school captured both the boys and girls Nashua City Middle School Championships Saturday at Nashua High School North. Next year a new middle school will open, the McCarthy Middle School.

The event capped yet another busy Saturday during the local winter sports season.

Yesterday was also full of high school hockey, plus some wrestling, etc. So here is your complete rundown:

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

ELM STREET 61, PENNICHUCK 43

Gavin Valcourt, Kayden Phillis and Jayden Gutierrez were key players in Elm Street’s city championship, as jumped out to a 15-9 first quarter lead and led 45-31 by the end of the third quarter. Julian Desrosiers and Jacob Griffin were two of the Raiders who played well for Pennichuck.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL

ELM STREET 63, SAINT CHRISTOPHER 41

The Eagles led 36-25 at the half and maintained that lead throughout the second half en route to the title, led by the play Ellery Zebrak, Alaina Small, and Joelle Primo. Hailey McGowan was a top player for Saint Christopher.

HIGH SCHOOLS

BOYS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 2, PINKERTON 1

The Cards got a second period goal from Ryan Lokken, assisted by Joe Dekarski and Jordan O’Hearn and that was the difference as they improved to 6-3-1.

Dekarski had an unassited goal in the first period. BG hosts the Bishop Brady co-op at Skate 3 on Wednesday.

BOW 4, NASHUA NORTH-SOUHEGAN 3

The Saber-Titans lost a heartbreaker, falling late to the Falcons despite two Chase McBride goals and one from Jacob Landry.

Now 4-4, N-S hosts the Manchester co-op on Wednesday at Conway Arena.

WINDHAM 5, NASHUA SOUTH-PELHAM 0

The injury-riddled Kings’ offensive woes continue as they managed only eight shots at Conway Arena.

The Kings, now 1-9, will try to snap their seven-game losing streak at Portsmouth-Newmarket.

MERRIMACK 10, ST. THOMAS 3

Eliot Medlock enjoyed a five-point day (hat trick, two assists) as the host Tomahawks moved to 7-2.

Joe Raymond had two goals, while Conor Dunn had a goal and two assists.

Other Tomahawk scorers were Felix Rattunde (plus an assist), Cam Bellemore, Jackson Woods and Brayden Guagliumi. William Farrell added an assist. James Brew got the win in goal.

The ‘Hawks are at Oyster River on Monday.

BERLIN-GORHAM 3, HOLLIS BROOKLINE-DERRYFIELD 1

Kyle Sanborn scored the lone goal for the 3-6 Warriors, assisted by Aden Escandon and Charlie Dee.

Rachel Irving had 37 saves in goal for the locals, who face Kearsarge-Plymouth on Wednesday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 8, KEENE-MONADNOCK-FALL MOUNTAIN 1

Jasmine Shattuck had a hat trick while Gracie Menicci had a goal and two assists as the Cards improved to 9-1.

Aine Kelly (two goals), Carly Green (two goals, two assists), Riley Goldthwaite (two assists) and Natile Gaffey and Grace Spangler (single assists) also contributed.

BG will be at Exeter on Wednesday.

WRESTLING

NASHUA SOUTH AT METHUEN INVITATIONAL

Connor Whitman at 165 finished in fourth place, advancing to the semifinals.

Landon Levesque fell in the quarterfinals at 215 as did Robert Perez at 150.

BISHOP GUERTIN GETS TWO WINS

The Cardinals beat Kearsarge 50-12 and Kingswood 47-24. Double winners included Austin Steinruck (106), Jack Kaler (120), James Algeo (132), John Forcier (144), Nick Rivera (157), Will Murphy (165), Matt Goldstein (215) and Bishop Kearns (285).

Gavin Peloquin (126), Jack Foster (150), Sam Ronzio (175) and Liam Connerty (190) all got wins as well.

BOYS BASKETBALL

SOUHEGAN 52, SANBORN 40

The Sabers got 20 points from Weston Hickman for their second win of the season. Drew Reagan added 11 for the Sabers, who face Milford on Tuesday.
