Tourney Time! North vs. South baseball on tap Thursday
Nashua North's Derek Finlay looks to make another play after forcing Nashua South's River Hart at second during the Panthers' 1-0 Battle of the Bridge win nearly a month ago at Holman Stadium. The two teams meet Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Divison I prelims at Holman Stadium. (Telegraph photo by TOM KING)
Fasten your seat belts, the Tourney Trail is underway and it will take you nearly two weeks to navigate.
And one of the early stops will be a classic: Nashua North vs. South baseball.
That will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Holman Stadium, the first time ever these two teams will square off in the postseason.
There are two all-local matchups on Wednesday in softball and girls lacrosse, as the Alvirne and Bishop Guertin softball teams play today, weather permitting, at 4 p.m. in the Division I prelims, and the Nashua South girls lacrosse team will be at Souhegan at 5 p.m. in the Division I quarterfinals.
There are three local No. 1 seeds: Hollis Brookline (15-1) in Division II baseball, and both the Bishop Guertin boys and girls lacrosse teams
Here’s a look at how things are locally by sport:
BASEBALL
DIVISION I – North (15-4) vs. South (7-12) highlights things in the prelims, with only top seed Portsmouth getting a bye. The other biggie will be No. 8 Bishop Guertin (13-7) vs. No. 9 Bedford (12-8) Thursday, at Manchester’s Gill Stadium at 4 p.m.
Bedford beat BG at Holman back on April 18. The winner’s reward is a trip Saturday to face No. 1 Portsmouth (18-1) in the quarters. North or South would face either Exeter or Dover; North would have to travel, South would host.
Division II – The Cavaliers (15-1) get first round bye and will take on the winner of No. 8 Kingswood-No. 9 Plymouth. They didn’t play Plymouth but beat Kingswood 10-1.
Souhegan is the third seed, and the Sabers (14-5) would host Stevens (6-10) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.; Souhegan won the regular season matchup 11-1. A win and Souhegan hosts either No.6 Oyster River or No. 11 Lebanon in Saturday’s quarters. Milford (6-10) had quite a second half run after an 0-8 start making the tourney as the 12th seed and will trek to No. 5 Hanover (11-4) Thursday. The teams did not play earlier.
Division III – Campbell also had a good season (No. 9, 11-5) and will be at No.8 Hopkinton. The winner goes to No. 1 Monadnock on Saturday in the quarters. The Cougars lost to both during the regular season.
Division IV – The Warriors of Wilton-Lyndeborough are the No. 9 seed and will visit No. 8 Concord Christian (Both 10-6) on Thursday, and the teams did not meet previously. If they win they won’t have to go far; they’d be at No. 1, 15-1 Derryfield on Saturday, which owns two wins over the Warriors, 14-4 and 7-2.
SOFTBALL
Division I – No. Alvirne and BG are both 11-7, but the Broncos get the home game by virtue of Alvirne’s 7-3 win over the Cards back on April 20. The only other prelim involving a local is No. 12 Merrimack (10-8) at No. 5 Pinkerton (13-5) today at 4 p.m. The Tomahawks beat Pinkerton, 6-5, early in the season.
The Alvirne-BG winner gets top seed Exeter (17-1) Saturday in the quarterfinals on the road. Merrimack-Pinkerton will take on the winner of Salem-Bedford that day as well.
Division II – Hollis Brookline (10-6) goes in as No. 6 and will host No. 11 Pembroke (7-9) today at 4:30 p.m. No. 12 Milford (7-9) will be at No. 5 Kingswood (12-4). Neither of these matchups were played during the regular season. If HB wins, it goes to face No. 3, 14-2 John Stark on Saturday, while Milford would go to face No. 4, 13-3 Stevens. HB lost to Stark 8-6 just last Friday.
Division III – Defending champion Campbell is the No. 2 seed at 14-2, and will host No. 15 Somersworth (5-11) today at 4, and then if they win as expected host either No. 7 Hopkinton (12-4) or No. 10 White Mountains (12-6) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
BOYS LACROSSE
Division I – Nothing local until Saturday, when No. 6 Pinkerton (10-8) is at No. 3 Nashua South (14-4) at 11 a.m.at Stellos in the quarterfinals. No. 2 Bishop Guertin (16-2) will host No. 7 Bedford (8-8) either at Stellos or elsewhere at a time tba (the Division II girls at Stellos creates a time conflict).
South beat Pinkerton for the first time in ages 7-3 just over a week ago while Guertin handled Bedford 15-7 on May. 9
The fun: BG and South, if they win, square off in the semis next Wednesday in Exeter.
Division II – Both locals will be on the road on Thursday in the prelims. No. 13 Hollis Brookline (6-10) is at No. 4 Timberlane (12-4) at 5 p.m, and the Cavs gave the Owls a hard time, 8-6, back on May 17. No. 14 Alvirne (6-10) is at No. 3 Windham (13-3); the Broncos lost twice to the Jags, 15-2 and 20-4 during the season. If there are upsets, HB gets winner of No. 5 St. Thomas-No. 12 Memorial-Central, and Alvirne would be at either Winnacunnet or Goffstown in Saturday’s quarters.
Division III – The powerful Campbell Cougars get a first round bye and host Thursday’s winner of No. 8 Kearsarge vs. No. 9 Gilford in the quarterfinals on Saturday. They beat Kearsarge 12-6 and Gilford 13-7 back-to-back at home in April. The semis are next Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at Laconia’s Bank of New Hampshire Stadium.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Division I – Today is a biggie with No. 5 Nashua South (13-5) at No. 4 Souhegan (12-3) at 5 p.m. in Amherst, a rematch of a great 12-10 game, won by the Sabers, back on April 30.
Meanwhile, Bishop Guertin will host No. 8 Exeter (9-9) at 5 p.m. at Stellos, a team the Cards beat 18-7 this spring. The key here is that Guertin, with an expected win, would face local South or Souhegan in Saturday’s semis at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium at 7 p.m.
Division II – No. 3 Hollis Brookline (13-4) will host No. 6 Goffstown (11-5) today at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals; interestingly enough the Cavs beat the Grizzlies 13-7 in the season opener but lost 12-11 in the regular season finale. The winner goes directly to the semis at Stellos at 5 p.m. Saturday vs. either No. 2 Hanover or No. 7 Pembroke. The finals are next Wednesday at Stellos at 7 p.m.
Division III – Today No. 5 Campbell (10-5) is at No. 4 Derryfield (10-3) at 5 p.m.; the Cougars lost 14-6 during a regular season meeting.
The winner faces either No. 1 Bow or No. 8 Pelham in the 7 p.m. semis at the Bank of New Hampshire Stadium on Saturday in the semis.
