HS Roundup: Panther girls get first win; Trinity boys top South

The wait is over for the Nashua High School South girls basketball team, as the Panthers handled Trinity of Manchester at the Belanger Gym on Friday night.
That’s the main news on a busy Friday night of basketball, that featured a tough losses for the South, Alvirne and Merrimack boys. Meanwhile, the Merrimack hockey team returned from a pandemic pause but fell short at St. Thomas of Dover.
Here’s a look at a frigid Friday’s results:
GIRLS BASKETBALL
NASHUA SOUTH 55,
TRINITY 35
The Panthers (1-9) woes have ended as they win their first game of the season. Morgan Gillis led the team with 13 points; Ella Karavanic added 12 and Maizie Barker had 11. South hosts Concord on Wednesday.
BISHOP GUERTIN 54,
MANCHESTER MEMORIAL 24
The Cardinals (9-1), as expected, cruised past the struggling Crusaders (3-7, six straight defeats) at the Colligadome.
Catelyn Wheeler had 12 points to lead BG, while Molly Smith added 10 and Brooke Paquette nine. The Cards host Merrimack on Monday.
EXETER 57,
NASHUA NORTH 25
The struggles, especially offensively, continue for the Titans, who dropped their eighth straight (1-8) and have only had one game scoring out of the 20s since scoring 47 in their season opener.
North will try to shake its slump at Windham on Monday.
ALVIRNE 54,
WINNACUNNET 27
With a full roster back on the floor the Broncos (5-4) pick up a win on their home court. Paige McKinley scored 17 points and Jaime O’Connor added 12 for the locals. Alvirne hosts Londonderry on Saturday.
PORTSMOUTH 55,
MERRIMACK 42
The Tomahawks (6-5) were outplayed in the fourth quarter after a 37-37 tie at the end of the third. Kaylee Bormuth registered a 13-point/12-rebound game until she was injured going into the final quarter.
Madison McCaffery also totaled 13 points, six assists and four steals for the Tomahawks who visit Bishop Guertin on Monday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
TRINITY 63,
NASHUA SOUTH 55
The Panthers (5-6) had the lead in the fourth quarter, and then Trinity outscored South 19-6 to take away the win.
Josh Caruso had a team high 19 points and Zac Castonguay scored 12. Trinity’s Tyler Bike of Merrimack had a game high 22 points.
South visits Dover on Tuesday.
WINNACUNNET 36,
ALVIRNE 35
The Broncos (4-5) lose a heartbreaker as they held a two point lead with 0.3 seconds to go in regulation, then Winnacunnet’s Josh Schaake came off a screen to hit the game winning 3-pointer.
Brendan Graham led the Broncos with 17 points. Alvirne visits Londonderry on Saturday.
PORTSMOUTH 57,
MERRIMACK 53
It was another tough defeat for the Tomahawks (3-8), who have now lost their last two games by a combined total of five points. The Clippers, on the other hand, enjoyed their seventh straight win, improving to 7-2.
Merrimack, which got 22 points from Jack Tarlenton and 11 from David Roy, hosts Bedford on Wednesday.
STEVENS 49,
CAMPBELL 48
The Cougars (3-2) dropped their second straight contest on a late game winning 3-pointer by Stevens. Colton Martel led the offense with 13 points with Dylan Rice and Austin McHugh each had 11 points.
This was Campbell’s first game in two weeks, but the Cougars will now host Monadnock on Monday.
BOYS HOCKEY
ST. THOMAS 5,
MERRIMACK 3
The Tomahawks (0-2) got two goals from Eliot Medlock and two assists from Owen Miner in Dover but couldn’t recover from a 3-0 start by the Saints, who are now 4-0.
Brayden Guagliumi also scored for the ‘Hawks, who tallied all their goals in the third period. Cam Duby had an assist.
Merrimack is at Alvirne-Milford on Monday at Skate 3.
