NASHUA — If you want to get on top of the Nashua Silver Knights, you had better do it early in the day.

As Nashua manager Nick Guarino noted, the team is 0-5 in games that start before 6 p.m., and now 6-2 in games that start after 6, including Tuesday night’s 6-2 win over the Lowell Spinners before a Historic Holman Stadium announced crowd of 1,904.

What does Guarino attribute that to?

“Bus rides, quick turnarounds, early in the year we’re playing a night game, the next morning it’s a 10:30 (a.m.) game,” Guarino said. “I found that out yesterday, it’s pretty interesting. … We’re not a morning team.”

It was hard to say anything this early is a “must win”, but after two straight losses, the Knights didn’t want to start a streak in the wrong direction.

“No, definitely not,” said Guarino, whose 6-7 team took advantage of four Lowell miscues for three unearned runs. “It’s a good win.”

The Spinners (3-9) drew first blood in the third inning on a Cal Chance RBI single, but the Knights answered immediately with an AJ Kolb (Towson) sacrifice fly to tie it at 1.

Nashua took control in the sixth when Peter Keblinsky (University of Southern Maine) reached on a Lowell error, plating Nate Kearney (Stonehill) and Connor Smith (Gannon) to make it 3-1.

The Knights put the game away in the seventh on a Hudson Story (Bryant) sacrifice fly, a Connor Smith RBI single, and a Nate Kearney RBI single, pushing the lead to 6-1. Lowell added a run in the ninth on a Max Diamond RBI double, but it was too little too late.

Cam Piwnicki (Brown) was strong in his start, allowing just one unearned run over 4.2 innings with 4 strikeouts.

“He competes, very good,” Guarino said. “He goes out there and throws strikes.”

Sachin Gopal (U.S. Naval Academy) picked up the win in relief. Colten Shaffer (Millersville) and Brandon Metivier (Bellarmine) each tossed scoreless innings to keep the Spinners at bay.

Meanwhile, the Knights had scored just one run in 18 innings after scoring a whopping 16 runs Saturday night at Norwich.

“We were quiet,” Guarino said. “Tonight we put balls in play, we got a run across early, did a couple of jobs with the runner over … The barrels started to come alive a little bit, we played good defense, and we pitched really well.”

Nashua is off today and then hits the road Thursday night to take on the Westfield Starfires at 6:30 p.m. Just the time the Silver Knights like.
