It was a young team, so perhaps not much was expected of the Souhegan High School football Sabers.
But on Saturday they proved themselves to be a team that will be tough to deal with in the future, despite falling 47-20 at the hands of unbeaten Lebanon in the Division II quarterfinals.
Souhegan was trailing 27-6 after a half when freshman QB Romy Jain hit Tony Garrant on a 63-yard TD on the first play of the third quarter. A few minutes later, the Sabers’ next play was a 76-yard TD run by J.J. Bright and suddenly it was 27-20, Souhegan hanging tough against a Raider team that blew it out 41-0 just over a month ago.
However, Lebanon QB Jack Stone scored on a 5-yard run to help make it 34-20 near the end of the third quarter.
The Raiders, who will host Milford next Saturday in the semifinals, then got two TDs in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Jain had first-half 17-yard TD toss to Madux McGrath, making it a 7-6 game early on. Souhegan (5-4) had trouble stopping Nyeoti Punni, who rushed for 130 yards and two TDs.
Bright led the Sabers with 116 yards rushing and his TD, while Jain completed 8 of 17 for 112 yards and two TDs.
“They were a young team at the beginning of the season,” said Lebanon coach Chris Childs of Souhegan. “But they’ve definitely gotten better.”
The Sabers, who won it all last year with a senior team, will have to take that progress into next season.
