Local Roundup: Merrimack hockey opens with 7-0 win

Nashua South-Pelham wasn’t the only local high school hockey team to open its season Saturday

The Merrimack Tomahawks, whom the Kings host next weekend, finally got going for the 2021 season, starting Saturday with a resounding 7-0 win over Goffstown keyed by senior efforts on Senior Day at West Side Arena.

Meanwhile the BG girls hockey team keeps the good times skating. Here are yesterday’s local results for hockey, wrestling and bowling:

BOYS HOCKEY

MERRIMACK 7,

GOFFSTOWN 0

Eliot Medlock had a hat trick and an assist to pace the Tomahawks, while Owen Miner and Dylan Sadowski each added a goal and an assist.

Other goal scorers for Merrimack were Dom Carozza, Brayden Guagliumi, and Kyle Dunn. Other assists went to and Connor Dunn.

Meanwhile, senior Ben Hardy earned a shutout in goal for the ‘Hawks, who host Nashua North-Souhegan on Monday at 4 p.m. at Manchester’s West Side Arena.

GIRLS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 9,

SOUHEGAN 0

The host Cards got their second win in the last few days over their local rival, led by hat tricks by Kathryn Simpson and Lindsay Hult. Simpson added two assists and Hult had one.

Sarah King got her first shutout of the season in goal for BG, which hosts Oyster River on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Hudson’s Cyclones Arena. The Sabers (0-4) are at Pinkerton that night.

BOYS BASKETBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 23

Austin Jain had 11 points and Brady Rudolf nine as the visiting Sabers cruised past a split-squad Cavs team.

It was determined that the players for HB who played in Friday night’s game at Bishop Guertin would not play in yesterday’s matinee in Hollis, so the lineup included several underclassmen.

Andrew Eckman led the way for HB with six points while Joe Mahoney had five. HB hosts Pelham on Wednesday while the Sabers host ConVal on Tuesday.

WRESTLING

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 51,

MERRIMACK 23

The Cavaliers got pins from Seth Ponders (120), Hunter Crea (126), Troy Moscatelli (138), Robinson McAdams (145), Hunter Hudzik (170) and Ethan Strauss at 285. They also got a minor decision from John Duval at 132.

The Tomahawks, meanwhile, picked up a win by fall at 160 by Anson Dewar, as well as minor decision wins by Joey Leblanc at 152 and Gabe Victal at 182.

They got points for HB forfeits at 106 and 113 while HB got them at 195 and 220.

The Cavs host BG on Thursday, while Merrimack is at Nashua South on Wednesday.

The Cardinals (3-0) got six pins, by Connor Macdonald at 138, Will Murphy (152), Zach Rioux (160), James Murphy (170), Matt Ha (182), Aiden Szewczyk (220) and Zach Connerty (285).

They also got a forfeit win at 113. BG visits Hollis Brookline on Thursday in a big Division II match.

BOWLING

The Tomahawks were led by Ryan Church with a 310 (155 average), Mason Anketell (298, 149 average), Ryan Croto (289, 145 average) and Max Townsend (284, 142 avg).

Merrimack squares off vs. Hollis Brookline next Saturday while Souhegan faces Bishop Guertin.

Jarrett Tousignant (202, 191) and Zach Sommer (246, 193) bowled well in the standard round for the Cavs.
