Local Tourney Roundup: Bronco teams advance past South

Thursday was a good day to be a Bronco.

The Alvirne High School girls soccer team as well as the girls volleyball team recorded tourney wins, both over Nashua South, and will now continue on their postseason runs this weekend.

Here’s the rundown on all the local tourney action, that also included girls soccer wins for Milford, Hollis Brookline, and Campbell:

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

DIVISION I PRELIMS

ALVIRNE 3,

NASHUA SOUTH 2

The Broncos pulled out a 15-12 win in the final set of a back-and-forth match as they dethroned the Division I defending champions.

Alvirne took the first and third sets 25-22, 26-24 while the Panthers won sets two and four, 25-18, 25-13.

The loss snapped the Panthers’ (5-6) five match winning streak, as the Broncos improved to 6-4 and will host Hollis Brookline on Saturday.

For Alvirne, outside hitter Molly O’Donnell (11 kills, six digs) was having a great night before an injury sidelined her at the end of set three. Senior outside Emily Elston put the team on her back and was an offensive juggernaut with 15 kills, 13 digs, especially in the decisive fifth set. Camile Isaza had 13 digs and Gracie MacLeod had 11 digs, 26 assists.

South was led by Natalie Boyle (11 kills, eight digs), Alexis Farrell (eight kills, seven blocks), Anne Sherman (eight digs, 36 assists), Kim Hendrick (eight kills) and Olivia Johnson (12 digs).

GIRLS SOCCER

DIVISION I PRELMS

ALVIRNE 4,

NASHUA SOUTH 1

Alvirne scored four first half goals and held on for the win, led by three assists from Marissa Juliano. The Broncos (6-2-1) will now host Bishop Guertin on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

Paige Boudreau had the first two goals, followed by goals from Maddie Bertrand and Kelly Perry.

Bella Coppi played well on defense and had the final assist.

Also, Bronco Paige McKinley had 11 saves in goal, as the Panthers lone goal was scored by Camile Michon.

Kylie Dawe had a strong defensive game as well for the Panthers, who finished their season at 1-7-1.

DIVISION II PRELIMS

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 2,

SOUHEGAN 0

Sofia Walle scored two goals in a five minute span early in the second half , as the Cavaliers now move on to Sunday’s quarterfinals vs. Milford.

Walle’s first goal came off a cross from Rachel Brackett. She later pounced on a loose ball after a collision between Renee Leblanc and Saber keeper Hunter Stonebreaker.

HB goalie Maggie Crooks had eight saves, including robbing Saber striker Greta Caulton point blank. Stonebreaker had her own signature save, robbing Brackett. Sophie Warren also played well for the Cavs.

The Sabers, who bid farewell to seniors Anna Goyette, Taryn Quinlan, Madi Lamar, Nathalie Patnaude, and Stonebraker, finshed 3-4-1.

MILFORD 4,

PELHAM 0

Marissa Sage started the scoring off while Rachel Gizzonio scored 2 and Brooke Gizzonio added a goal for the Spartans, who visit Hollis Brookline in the quarters on Sunday.

Caroline Tessier had five saves in the Spartan goal for the shutout.

DIVISION III PRELIMS

CAMPBELL 7,

CONANT 1

The 5-5-1 Cougars got hat tricks from Gabby Kim-Levesque and Karleigh Schultz to advance to a Sunday quarterfinal at either Fall Mountain or Monadnock.

Brooke Stoncius also scored for Campbell.

DIVISION IV PRELIMS

SUNAPEE 7,

WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 1

An otherwise good season ended on the road vs. unbeaten Sunapee in the pouring rain for the Warriors (7-5), who trailed 5-0 at the half.

Elisabeth Jacob had a goal for WLC and was about to have a penalty kick but officials called the game early due to deteriorating conditions.
