Tourney Roundup: Tomahawks edge Broncos in prelims

The Merrimack High School boys soccer team got a goal in the final few minutes during stoppage time by Connor Lanigan to edge Alvirne, 3-2 in the Division I prelims, highlighting a busy local tournament day.

The Tomahawks (4-3-1) clinch a tight contest against the Broncos to keep their season alive and set up a quarterfinal with Nashua South on Saturday.
Lanigan’s goal snapped a 2-2 tie, as the game was scoreless at the half but Merrimack had a 2-1 second half lead before the Broncos tied it.
Alvirne took a 1-0 lead about five minutes into the second half. Two minutes later, Carson Papp scored on a free kick 20 yards out to tie the game.
A few minutes later, Sawyer Hardy’s shot was saved and landed at the feet of Aziz Defaa who finished to put Merrimack up 2-1.
With eight minutes to play Alvirne tied the game and with two minutes left in regulation, Lanigan (who is leading the team in takeaways) intercept the ball and crushed home the game winner from 25 yards out.
Merrimack (4-3-1) had lost twice to the Broncos just last week, and it’s the first postseason win for the ‘Hawks in the last several seasons.
Jack Dufor and Jack Ashworth scored one goal apiece for Alvirne, which finished an otherwise fine season at 6-3.

The Sabers squeak out a win to keep their season alive. Ethan Ramm, Miles Drum and Alex Lin found the back of the net. Ramm, Ethan Littlefield and Simon Trombley added assists.
Goalie Jake Morrisette made six saves in net. Souhegan will play Hollis Brookline on Saturday in a quarterfinal matchup.
HOLLIS BROOKLINE 5,
MANCHESTER WEST 0
The Cavaliers shut out West on Wednesday in their first round matchup. Bryan Wright netted two goals, while Ethan Smith, Liam Troddyn and Joe Mahoney had one each. Jackson Koopman recorded his fifth shutout of the season, with help from Danny Kennedy and John Kotelly on defense. HB hosts Souhegan on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
DIVISION IV PRELIMS
SUNAPEE 5,
WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 1
The Warriors season came to an end on the road , with Troy Brennan getting their lone goal. Sunapee now moves on to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

DIVISION II PRELIMS

MANCHESTER WEST 0
The Cougars shutout West 25-6, 25-18, 25-16 to advance to the next round. Chloe Steiniger added seven aces and three kills to go along with her 19 assists. Catherine Carignan (four aces, four kills), Morgan Bruner (six kills, four assists) and Kiana Henderson (two aces, four kills) contributed in the win. Campbell plays Milford on Friday.

The Spartans sweep the Sabers 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 to continue into the playoffs. Izzy Unsworth (nine kills, eight digs, three aces), Stella Crosby (nine digs, three aces, two assists), Bailey Johnson (four kills, four blocks, two digs) and Sophie Palmer (11 digs, two aces, two assists) played well in the win. Milford will play Campbell on Friday.
