By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 29, 2020

Telegraph photo by TOM KING Bishop Guertin's Alexandra Nutting (21) and Bella Reichard can't react quickly enough to a return by Hollis Brookline's Emily Dreyer (22) during the Cavaliers' 3-0 win over the host Cardinals in Nashua on Monday.

NASHUA – They are on a mission, warning teams to get out of their way.

Yes, the Hollis Brookline High School Cavaliers want to avenge last year’s girls volleyball snapping of their four-year Division I title dominance.

So far, Nashua South this past Friday and Bishop Guertin on Monday night after a 3-0 loss at the Colligadome can bear witness.

“We did not like how the season ended last year,” Cavs coach Becky Balfour said, adding that this season has started “fantastic…

“We return nine players from last year, and this is probably, collectively with the kids we have here the tightest group. They’re together 24-7.”

The Cavs sweep was by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 26-24. Guertin rallied from down 17-10 and 24-21 to knot things at 24 in that third game before falling. Cavs sophomore Cheyenne Colbert giving a resounding point with a clinching kill, one of her 10 on the night to go with two blocks.

Guertin’s comeback was something to build on, especially since the two square off again in Hollis on Friday.

“I’m super proud of them,” Guertin coach Abby Savard said. “It’s just fine tuning a few little things. We played tough, we played with all our heart, that’s absolutely important, for sure.

“We showed we could play right with them.”

Guertin (2-1), which fell to the Cavs in the 2017 title match, is also looking to improve this season after a sub-par campaign last year. Savard feels they are.

“That’s the thing,” she said. “I never felt like we were completely out of it. I felt we were in there the entire time. … Our goal is to improve before we get into tournament play.”

For the Cards, Caroline Sullivan had four aces, six assists, and five digs, while Caroline Sander had three kills and Maddy Keating had two kills and 11 digs.

After Colbert’s monster match, the Cavs got five kills each from Emily and Sarah Dreyer, three aces from Emily Sartell, six digs from Jessica Cooper and a whopping 25 assists by Angelina Leonard.

The match proved valuable for the Cavs who had to withstand BG’s third set comeback.

“They rallied back, but I liked our girls having the challenge,” Balfour said. “We just told them they handled that fantastic. A lot of teams would’ve caved under that pressure and they closed it out.”
