Alvirne lacrosse player anxious for senior season

By Hector Longo - Staff Writer | Mar 26, 2020

HUDSON – For Donny Buchanan and the handful of four-year varsity seniors in the Alvirne High lacrosse program, this spring is more than just a season.

It’s the continuation of a construction program.

“It’s the fifth varsity year for Alvirne lacrosse. The program is so new and still developing,” said Buchanan, a standout middie with the Broncos. “We need this season to keep building.”

Buchanan, like his teammates, takes lacrosse seriously. He’s put a ton in.

“I’ve put every ounce of my lacrosse being into Alvirne lacrosse,” he says. “Since freshman year, I’ve given it my all.”

And now COVID-19 is looking to cut their time short.

“As far as I know, we’re going to have a season, but it could be a shortened one,” said Buchanan, who played linebacker on the state semifinalist Broncos football team in the fall then went on to indoor lax and rec hoop over the winter months.

“I feel like there is unfinished business with Alvirne lacrosse. It stinks that we could potentially have it stripped away.”

Buchanan finds it hard to focus on the distant future during these times, but it is bright.

He recently committed to play lacrosse at Rivier University, where he will study business management while hanging close to home.

“There was so much about Rivier to like, and I really felt it when I went on my overnight visit there with the team. I didn’t get that same vibe when I visited other schools,” said Buchanan. “They are building a very good lacrosse program there, and I just felt like it was the right fit for me.”

At Rivier, Buchanan can stay home and save money, commute to campus and focus on his studies with an eye on someday soon starting his own business.

For now, he’s doing his best to finish up on his studies, albeit electronically at home, hoping that there will be movement on the coronavirus and a season can be saved.

At first he attempted to gather with friends to work on ball skills. For now, it’s social distancing and wall ball.

All with a positive attitude.

“I’m trying to keep busy any way possible,” said Buchanan.

“I really hope we can have a season. We have a great group coming back and a lot of guys coming up who are ready to play at the varsity level. We all want to hit those goals that we’ve been setting since freshman year.”
