State announces largest social media settlement in history
CONCORD – Gov. Kelly Ayotte and state Attorney General John Formella recently announced a landmark $17.1 billion multistate settlement with Meta Platforms, Inc., which owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads. Under the settlement, New Hampshire will receive up to $224.3 million paid in 10 equal installments. In addition to the payment, Meta must implement a sweeping set of safety features designed to protect children on Instagram and Facebook. The agreement resolves claims by 47 other states as well as Washington D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that the company designed Instagram and Facebook with addictive features, knowingly exposed young users to serious mental harm and intentionally misled the public about the safety of its platforms, among other things.
