DURHAM – University of New Hampshire men’s basketball freshman guard Tyler Bike of Merrimack was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. It is his first collegiate accolade.
Bike scored a career-high 10 points and matched his personal bests in rebounds (four), assists (four) and steals (two) to lead UNH to a 65-48 win at the University of Maine on Jan. 19. He also played a career-high 28:51 in his second career start.
Bike made 4 of 7 field goal attempts, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, to establish his benchmark of 10 points and his four assists led all players.
In the second half, UNH’s lead was whittled down to 13 points, 45-32, before Bike engineered a 7-0 run with an assist that set up a dunk (at 11:27), hit a 3-pointer (10:44) and a jumper in the paint (10:01) on three consecutive UNH possessions to give the Wildcats the largest lead of the game, 52-32.
Maine once again trimmed the deficit to 13 points before Bike hit a step-back 3-pointer that beat the shot clock and gave momentum back to UNH with a 59-43 lead and 4:19 on the clock.
In the second half, Bike recorded 10 points, three rebounds and three assists in 19:12 to keep Maine at bay.
UNH begins a three-game homestand Saturday at 6 p.m. against Binghamton University.
