UNH Hockey Roundup: Wins or both men and women
DURHAM – Senior captain Morgan Winters posted three points and junior alternate captain J.P. Turner scored the game winner as the No. 20 University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team defeated Colgate, 3-2, on Sunday evening in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex in non-conference action. The teams split the series as Colgate won on Saturday, 3-2.
Winters recorded one goal and two assists, while junior forward Nick Ring tallied one goal and one assist, and freshman defensemen Conner de Haro secured two assists. Senior goalie Kyle Chauvette of Goffstown made 18 saves to earn the win.
The Wildcats improve to 11-8-0, while the Raiders fall to 7-11-2.
Next up for the Wildcats will be matchup with Northeastern at the Whitt on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
UNH 6, LIU 1
The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team skated to a 6-1 win over Long Island University (6-10-1, 4-8-1 NEWHA) on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 4) at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
New Hampshire opened the scoring late in the first period when Josie Linn won the puck off the half-wall before connecting a feed to Addison Spitz in the slot, who fired home past LIU’s Clara Kammholz with 11.5 seconds to play.
The Wildcats doubled their lead 5:10 into the middle frame as Nina Rossi skated into the LIU zone before firing from the high slot, beating Kammholz to make it 2-0. Sadie Makokis earned the assist following a successful poke check in the Wildcats’ own zone to set up the play.
Long Island broke onto the scoreboard 3:06 later when Crosby Wildfong fired from the left face-off circle, pinging the puck off the cross bar to cut the lead in half.
New Hampshire regained their two-goal edge over the Sharks with 9:33 to play in the second, when Kelly Harty tapped in a Sydney Leonard feed in the crease.
The Wildcats netted their third goal of the period with 2:05 to play in the frame when Linn settled a pass from Spitz in the neutral zone, before outpacing the LIU defensemen to the left face-off circle and firing on net to make it a 4-1 affair.
UNH extended their lead midway through the third period, when Danika Botterill (Portage La Prairie, Manitoba) passed it to Makokis in the high slot, who fired on net and connected with the twine to make it 5-1.
Leonard found her first goal of the night and second goal of the weekend 1:50 later after putting away a loose puck in the low slot, bringing about the final 6-1 tally.
