Red Sox get RHP Watson from Athletics for minor leaguer

BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox Wednesday acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Watson from the Athletics, in exchange for minor league infielder/outfielder Justin Riemer and cash considerations. Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 40.

Watson, 28, was selected by the Athletics from the San Francisco Giants in the Rule 5 Draft Wednesday after posting a 4.26 ERA (24 ER/50.2 IP) and 11.37 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (64 strikeouts) during 2025 in 46 games with Triple-A Sacramento. Signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an undrafted free agent in 2020, the Alabama native owns a 4.14 ERA (159 ER/345.1 IP) in 157 career minor league games (34 starts) in the Baltimore and San Francisco organizations.

Riemer, 23, was selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. The right-handed hitter has batted .239 (84-for-352) with 25 RBI, 98 walks, and a .705 OPS in 120 career minor league games with Boston.
