TWO DOWN: Patriots had some wrinkles to second preseason game

By Tom King - | Aug 23, 2026

Two down, one to go.

Yes, Saturday night concluded the home portion of the New England Patriots preseason.

Sure,we’ll say thank goodness. But we’ll also say that Saturday night’s New England Patriots meaningless attempt at NFL football had its moments, and here’s what we saw:

First, we finally saw a glimpse at what the Patriots see in last year’s second round pick, Kyle Williams, as he snared a 69-yard TD pass from No. 2 QB but last night’s first half signal caller Tommy DeVito. Thats what Williams is here for.

— Still on receivers, neither Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins nor DeMario Douglas played. But we were fed a steady diet of Efton Chism III. No way he survives waivers unclaimed as a way to the practice squad. Some interesting decisions coming. As VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf said on WBZ at halftime, “It’s a good problem to have.”

— The closest Drake Maye came to action was in pregame warmups with a helmet on. Would the Patriots dare give him a quarter at Cleveland in the preseason finale on Thursday night? Doubt it. See you in Seattle, Drake. Vrabel’s explanation was startling.

“I do not think we have a very deep team, so I think we have to make sure that we are preparing our football team and that we are doing everything that we can to keep our best players available,” he said. “And if that means playing Thursday as part of preparation, then that is what we will do. I have not made that decision yet, but I would say that that is something that I am confident in with where we are set up currently.”

The depth comment was startling.

—- If anything ever happened to Maye, the Patrriots could still at least tred water with DeVito. He won a few games with the Giants using his legs, and last night ran three times for 44 yards yo actually lead the team. And he dropped that dime to Willliams. “I always say the more reps the better,” DeVito said.

— With Will Campbell getting the night off with most of the starters, and Marcus Bryant suffering a leg injury, first round pick Caleb Lomu played at left tackle. He looked so-so as one would expect for a rookie. But Lomu wasn’t drafted in first round to be Campbell’s backup, the idea is to at some point down the road have them both out there at same time. Where is the question.

“Just love playing football,” he said. “Anywhere on the field is where I want to be,wherever they need me. I love playing on this team;wherever they think is best for me to go is where I’ll go.”

—- Wolf was asked at halftime about the contract negotiations with corner Christian Gonzalez and said both sides were looking out for “what’s right for them.” Translation: Not close to the finish line.

— Three hours before the game the Eagles had a group on the practice field behind Gillette running sprints etc. The guess? The players who werent slated to play last night. No days off.

— Best news of the night was that Eagles’ Ja’Quinden Jackson, taken away by ambulance after being injured on the opening kickoff, had movement in his extremeties and was taken away for evaluation. Scary but a good outcome, reportedly.

— Fans in the fourth quarter were enjoying — believe it or not — the Wave. Yes, a good time was had by all.
