UNH Roundup: Wildcat skaters sweep Maine; men’s hoop tops BU
ORONO, Me. – Junior forward Nick Ring, junior alternate captain J.P. Turner and sophomore defenseman Josh Player each scored for the Wildcats as the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team defeated No. 11 Maine, 3-2, on Saturday evening at Alfond Arena in the Border Battle.
The Wildcats sweep the series as UNH won 1-0 on Friday. The last time UNH swept a two-game series versus Maine at Alfond Arena was Feb. 8-9, 2008, with 3-2 and 4-1 wins.
Senior goalie Kyle Chauvette of Goffstown made 28 saves to earn the win.
The Wildcats, who have won four consecutive games, improve to 9-7-0 (5-4-0 Hockey East), while the Black Bears fall to 8-7-1 (5-5-0 Hockey East).
The Wildcats return to the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex on Sunday, Dec. 14 versus Granite State rival No. 10 Dartmouth at 4 p.m.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
UNH 3, MAINE 2 (Shootout)
The Wildcats skated to a 2-2 tie against Maine (6-11-2, 3-5-2 HEA) before earning the extra league point with a 2-1 shootout win.
The Black Bears opened the shootout with a score from Brenna Curl, but were unable to hang on, as Aurora Kahlert and Lee’s Julia Cabral netted tries in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, giving UNH the shootout win.
Kelly Harty netted the first goal of the game 5:53 into the second period, ripping a shot from the right face-off circle and beating Maine’s Kiia Lahtinen blocker-side for the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats doubled their lead 48 seconds into the third period when Danika Botterill collected a cross-zone feed from Nina Rossi, beating Lahtinen on the one-timer to make it a 2-0 contest.
Maine got one back with 3:17 to play when Mikayla Boarder fired on net, rolling the puck off the shoulder of Sedona Blair to cut the lead in half.
The Black Bears tied things up on the power-play 50 seconds later when Stephanie Jacob collected a Paige Fong rebound in the slot, firing glove-side on a backhanded try to force overtime.
The Wildcats open the second half of their schedule at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex on Saturday, Jan. 3, when UNH hosts LIU (6-8-1, 4-8-1 NEWHA) for a 2 p.m. puck drop.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
UNH 88, BOSTON UNIVERSITY 82 (OT)
Junior guard KiJan Robinson made the game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation and finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Wildcats at Lundholm Gym.
After BU made a pair of free throws to take a 74-71 lead with 4.1 seconds left in the second half, Robinson quickly advanced up the right side, pulled up and hit a step-back, off-balance shot to tie the score.
BU scored first in the five-minute extra session, but Robinson made consecutive layups to give the Wildcats a 78-77 lead at 3:51 that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Junior forward Belal El Shakery recorded a double-double of 18 points and career-high 14 rebounds. Junior guard Jack Graham and redshirt freshman guard R.J. Kennedy also scored in double digits for the ‘Cats with 13 and 12, respectively.
Michael McNair led five BU double-digit scorers with 21 points.
UNH returns to action Dec. 17 for a 6 p.m. home against Stonehill College at Lundholm Gym.
