Rivier Roundup: Field hockey, volleyball fall, 0-0 for men’s soccer

NEWTON, Mass. – The Rivier field hockey team fell, 6-2, to Lasell in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening at Grellier Field
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first frame was Lasers finding the back of the net four times.
Brianna Spinelli scored the lone goal of the second quarter, 4-1.
The Lasers extended their lead to four early in the third quarter. First-year Lexi Davies found the back of the net just shy of the midway point in the third, making it a 5-2 game.
Lasell tacked on one final final tally with just over three minutes remaining in the third. Both teams played a scoreless fourth quarter with the Lasers holding on defensively.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
Spinelli led the offense with eight shots, seven of which were on target and one goal…Senior goalkeeper Lily Gifford recorded six saves in the outing.

The Raiders return to play Saturday to take on GNAC opponents Saint Joseph (Conn.) at the USJ Field Hockey Field at 5 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
PLYMOUTH STATE 3, RIVIER 0
The Rivier women’s volleyball team fell in straight sets in a non-conference matchup against Plymouth State at the Muldoon Center.
With the loss, the Raiders fell to 6-9, while the Panthers improved to 11-4.
Plymouth St. opened the contest with an 8-3 run, while Rivier slowly chipped away at the Panthers’ lead, cutting it to four.The Panthers slowly regained their moment, regaining a five-point lead at 15-10.
A kill by junior Lacey Turner brought the Raiders within three, but Plymouth St. were able to hang on to that three-point advantage and claim the first set 25-19.
The Panthers continued to have success offensively, quickly gaining a 10-1 lead to begin the second set. The Raiders rallied with four consecutive kills, two of which were by the hand of senior Callie Nanos, with Turner and sophomore Lily Seibel adding one each in the rally,
The Panthers regained control following a timeout midway through the frame and used that momentum to carry them to a 2-0 lead in the match,
Plymouth State. carried over its momentum into the third set, taking a 14-3 lead. Back-to-back service aces from first-year Sofia Victal brought Rivier within nine; however, the Panthers’ early lead gave them the boost they needed to seal the match, 25-12
Nanos recorded a team-best four kills on a .333 hitting percentage…Seibel tallied a double-double consisting of 14 assists and 11 digs…As a team, Rivier out-blocked Plymouth St. 8-5.
The Raiders return to the court Saturday for a tri-match with Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents Colby Sawyer and non-conference foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
MEN’S SOCCER
RIVIER 0, KEENE STATE 0
With the draw on Youth Sports Night at Merrill Field, the Raiders move to 2-4-4, while the Owls move to 6-2-2.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither side able to generate consistent offensive momentum. Rivier created more chances in the second half, recording nine shots, but was unable to find the back of the net.
First-year Lucas Sades made his first collegiate start, tallying six saves to preserve the clean sheet. Rivier held the slight edge on shots, 8-11.
All corner kick opportunities came in the second half, with the Raiders holding a 2-1 advantage.
The Raiders return to conference play against Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday at the USJ Soccer Field, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.
