Fame is at Gillette all weekend, and we should soak it in

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 21, 2025

Fame is all over Gillette Stadium this weekend.

It’s the day after the induction of Bill Parcells and Julian Edelman into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame.

And a Pro Football Hall of Famer to be, Aaron Rodgers, is in town, and it does look strange to see him in a Steelers uniform.

Anybody who is at Gillette this weekend should be grateful. If you were at the ceremony on Saturday, you saw greatness. Will you see greatness today? Who knows, Rodgers is near the end of his career. One wonders how he would have gotten along with new Patriots Hall of Famer Bill Parcells. Why is he in the NE HOF after bolting the way he did after the Super Bowl in 1997? His backup QB, Scott Zolak will tell you.:

“We were going to be a relevant NFL team,” Zokak said.

“Parcells was old school, ruled with an iron fist, a fist by the way that included two Super Bowl rings,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. “They gave him instant credibility. …

“Bill made the players believe, made the fans beliee, and he made me belive… he laid the groundwork for the dynasty that followed.”

“It was tough love,” McGinest said. “He kicked our ass. … I always say he gave birth to my career and taught me what football was all about.”

“You wanted to be a Parcells guy,” Ted Johnson said. “He always had an emotional investment in seeing his guys do well.”

Then there’s Edelman. While we talk about Vinatieri’s slight, there’s no doubt Edeleman belongs in the Patriots Hall.

“A guy that I hated to practice against,” Patriot Devin McCourty said. “Every single day he brough a level of skill, a level of toughness and an understanding of the offense.”

“Just like in life, nothing in football is attainable alone,” Edelman said. “I was lucky to be drafted here because I got to be around (Tom Brady). He was the same guy every day. That was over 22 years. That’s a lot of days guys.”

“Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot be,” Edelman said. “…Thank you to football, for giving me a life I could never have dreamed of.”

It’s called Fame, and there hasn’t been much around Gillette the last few years. We’ll get a glimpse today.

Here’s this week’s picks, with not many all-AFC games besides the one at Gillette.

PATRIOTS 30, STEELERS 27

This could go either way, and the way the two defenses have played in the in the first two games, there should be plenty of points. The Steelers haven’t been able to run the ball and can’t stop the run and that’s a big problem for any NFL team to have. Advantage Patriots.

COLTS 23, TITANS 17

Colts QB Daniel Jones is the next Geno Smith, the next Sam Darnold, the next Baker Mayfield, the next …. Mac Jones? Kidding about that last one. But Jones has the mojo going.

CHARGERS 24, BRONCOS 17

This is Year Two of the Jim Harbaugh Era and the Chargers seem to be, well, charging to new heights. They’ve already beaten their nemisis, the Chiefs, and now they set their sights on the Broncos. Justin Herbert beats Bo Nix any day.

EAGLES 24, RAMS 21

This Philly team isn’t lighting up the scoreboard, but it’s got plenty of players in the right spots and does the one thing a champion does – know how to win. That’s all Jalen Hurts does, right? The Rams can scheme things up, but the Eagles push that tush.

CARDINALS 17, NINERS 13

This Mac Jones magic has to stop. Kyler Murray and the Cards should take care of that in a battle that’s for the top spot in the AFC West. The Niners seem to have had their day and begin the long road back. The Cards hope to be starting their road to their day. Could happpen.

BUCS 24, JETS 13

This could be a good one; it’s a test of Aaron Glenn as a coach to see how the Jets respond to last week’s no show. The Jets will respond but we just think Baker Mayfield can outscore Tyrod Taylor, who has to QB the Jets today because Justin Fields is out.

RAVENS 27, LIONS 17

For Detroit, no dome no win. They’re in Ravens territory, and Baltimore has a lot of pressure on it to win. The Lions don’t seem to have that same magic, they need to beat good teams. They won’t on Sunday night, Lamar Jackson won’t let them.

LAST WEEK: 5-2

REGULAR SEASON: 9-5
