When they lost seven straight down the stretch, who would have thought the Norwich Sea Unicorns would get a third straight Futures Collegiate Baseball League championship?
But that’s exactly what they did, blowing away the New Britain Bees in a deciding Game 3, 13-4, before 3,589 at New Britain Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
New Britain actually outhit Norwich, which was the fourth seed out of four teams in the postseason, finishing the regular season 28-33 but 4-1 in the postseason. But the Bees — who blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning in Game 2 — stung themselves yesterday with four errors leading to seven unearned runs. Ouch.
New Britain had leads of 2-0 and 4-1 before Norwich scored four in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead and then blew the game wide open with eight runs in the top of the eighth on six hits and two NB error. Bryce Detwiler, a force the entire series, had a two-run single in that big eighth inning for Norwich, giving him six RBIs in the best-of-three series.
Other big hitters for Norwich wee Chace Chaplin (2 for 3, two RBIs), and Gavin O’Brien (2 for 4, two RBIs). O’Brien’s single in the fifth put the Sea Unicorns ahead to stay.
Norwich had four doubles on the day and left seven on; the Bees left a whopping 13 men on base.
Sean Connolly was awarded the win on the mound, despite giving up two runs on four hit in three innings. Three Norwich pitchers followed and tossed scoreless ball. Starter Ty Davis took the loss for New Britain, which was led by Camden Righi’s 2 for 5, two-RBI day.
But it wasn’t enough as the FCBL season comes to the same close it has the last few years: with a Norwich championship.
