The Boston Bruins and their fans Saturday were hit with a jolt when the Bruins announced the passing of one of their popular former players from the 1980s, so-called enforcer Lyndon Byers at the age of 61.

Byers reportedly passed away Friday morning, but no cause of death was given.

Byers, a second round pick, played nine seasons with the Bruins beginning in 1983, and wrapped up his career with the San Jose Sharks in 1992-93. He had 28 goals and 71 points in his career, with 959 penalty minutes as a Bruin. That ranks 11th in franchise history.

Upon his retirement, he entered the Boston radio world, working for WAAF. Affectionally known as LB, he was a natural with his outgoing nature. He left that career in 2019.

The Bruins issued a statement on Byers’ passing:

“The Boston Bruins are deeply saddened by the passing of Lyndon Byers,” they said. “Lyndon was a fan favorite across his nine seasons in the Black & Gold thanks to his rugged rough-and-tumble style and was a key cog on the B’s teams that made trips to the Stanley Cup Final in 1988 and 1990.

“Following his playing career, Lyndon spent some 25 years as a local radio personality, entertaining scores of New Englanders every day with hs quick wit and boisterous voice.

“A son of Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Lyndon became a true Bostonian and we will miss him dearly. He is forever a part of our Bruins family. Our thoughts are with his wife Annie and son Will during this very difficult time.”

His wife Annie did also announce Byers’ passing on social media, saying “We recognize how many people loved and cared for him and considered him a friend. Keep LB in your memory, remember his smile and know how much he cared about all of you.”
