JOY FOR JULY: Here’s your sports calendar for the month
Yes, we are in the midst of summer. Don’t blink, it will go by quickly.
With that in mind, we’ll give you a few local and regional and even national sports dates to think about while you’re on the beach, etc.:
TUESDAY, JULY 1
Nothing major, but it’s the first game of the month for the Nashua Silver Knights as they’ll be hosting the Westfield Starfires in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. at Holman Stadium. This is the month where teams can separate themselves from the pack. All Nashua cares about is it’s not one of the two teams not to make the playoffs.
It’s also the start of NHL free agency, which will be interesting to see where former Bruin Brad Marchand ends up.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 2
Again, nothing major, but the Red Sox are hosting the Cincinnati Reds. The reason we bring this up is anytime the Sox and Reds tangle this old scribe thinks back to one of the best World Series ever, Boston vs. Cincinnati in 1975. The previous night the New Hampshire Fisher Cats are set to hold a celebration of that ’75 Sox team of their own.
FRIDAY, JULY 4
It’s the annual Nashua Silver Knights holiday morning game, and note the original time of 11 a.m.has been changed to 10:30, and it will also be what it was the first year the Knights did this: a seven inning game. The New Britain Bees will be the opponent. Remember, youths 12 and under will be admitted free and tickets are at a reduced price.
The changes in time and length are to help avoid last year’s fiasco in which the game had to be halted early because the fireworks company had to set up behind the outfield by mid-afternoon – the game had been dragging — and no one could be within a certain distance of that preparation.
MONDAY JULY 7
Head to Rochester Country Club, golf fans. That’s where the annual New Hampshire State Amateur Men’s Golf Championship will be held, beginning on this day and going all week until Saturday the 13th. Last year was the first in a while in which there were no locals in the finals. James Pleat will again be one to watch.
SATURDAY, JULY 12
Londonderry and Nashua’s Coffey Post will play a doubleheader at Holman Stadium at 11 a.m.and 1:30 p.m.; Londonderry got off to a 3-0 start in District B.
Also, it’s the finals of the State Am at Rochester CC. Will a local be in it? Stay tuned.
TUESDAY, JULY 15
Yes, it’s the Mid-Summer Classic. Does anyone refer to the MLB All-Star Game that way anymore? They should, it’s still the best of all the All-Star events with the four major sports. Really, the only one worth it, for sure. The Silver Knights are home that night as well vs. Norwich.
TUESDAY, JULY 22
It’s the night of the Futures Collegiate League All-Star Game, and the thing is this year while the Worcester Bravehearts are the host, it will be held at Worcester’s Polar Park. Not bad, huh? The scout combine and HR derby will be earlier at Fitton Field on Monday.
It’s also the day veterans have to report to Patriots training camp. No workouts, just physicals, etc.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 23
And so it begins. Patriots training camp at the fields behind Gillette Stadium, the first one under new coach Mike Vrabel.
It should be one heckuva camp, with a lot of questions needed to be answered. People forget Jerod Mayo did run a hard camp last year, but you wont see contracts being given out like candy or any drama like took place last year with Matthew Judon, etc.
THURSDAY, JULY 24
The Silver Knights are home vs. Vermont, but if you can’t go to the game, you’ll be able to see it live on NESN, as the network returns to do a stretch of Thursday night games. Nashua’s other NESN game is the previous week, July 17 at Worcester. Note that the game at Worcester is at 6 p.m.; the game between Vermont and Nashua at Holman on the 24th is at 7 p.m.
FRIDAY, JULY 25 THRU TUESDAY, JULY 29
The Senior American Legion tourney is right back at Holman, a double elimination gauntlet if there ever was one. Nashua lost a heartbreaker in the finals to Portsmouth. Can it get there again? Will Merrimack Post 98, back after a year’s absence, recover from an 0-3 start to make the tourney? Should be fun. The finals are that Tuesday.
SATURDY-SUNDAY JULY 26-27
Another big golf event, this time the Nashua City Golf Championship, with Saturday at Sky Meadow Country Club and Sunday at Nashua Country Club. Always a great event. John Duarte was the 2024 champ while Eric McCoy won the Senior title.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 30
The Red Sox are at the Minnesota Twins, and the only reason we mention this is that we hope Mickey Gasper will be back with the big club. He was sent down to the team’s Triple A team right nearby, the Saint Paul Saints, and recently was placed on the seven-day injured list. That Sox game is a 1:10 p.m. start.
That’s it for the month, the only month of the calendar year there is no NHIAA event. The high schools will be back by mid-August.
