The Nashua Silver Knights traveled north of the border again Wednesday for the second time in just a few days for a rematch with the Vermont Lake Monsters, looking to end a two-game skid.
Despite a hard-fought effort, Nashua came up short, falling 6-4 in a tightly contested battle at the University of Vermont’s Centennial Field.
The Knights would start Justin Dressler as manager Nick Guarino set his lineup in hopes of getting his team back in the win column. Dressler however would not help the Knights efforts in a shaky start.
In the first, Vermont’s Sean McMillian would double into the gap to drive in the first run of the game off Dressler. Vermont would add on one more to finish the inning and another inning the second before Dressler’s night was over.
The third, howeverm marked a changing point in the game as the Knights offense got going starting with the all-reliable Ernie Little getting on base. Little would eventually come around to score as Cole Patterson drove him in. Nashua kept going with the offense as in the fourth they added on more to cut the deficit to just 3-2 on a Dave Yorke double to score Patrick Shrake.
Scott Longo, who came on in immediate relief for the Knights was great in his first three innings of work. He allowed no runs up until the 6th where he got into some trouble. He would allow multiple runners on base which ultimately led to Vermont striking for two more as they pushed their lead to 6-2 following the frame.
Nashua’s offense would respond though as in the seventh Little and Patterson would get on base for Jack Balcer. Balcer in a big situation would double into the gap to drive in both and push the deficit to just two runs. Nashua’s pitching would hold up for the rest of the ballgame. However, the offense was at a standstill after the Balcer double.
Little and Balcer both led the Knights offense with two hits in the game and notably Little’s average has climbed to a staggering .443 as he has been atop the league most of the season.
After six straight wins, including two on the road, Nashua will now look to snap the three-game skid tonight at Vermont, the end of their second-longest road stretch. They’ll look forward to heading home to Holman stadium as they look to get back on track for a big weekend, beginning Friday with the Nashua Pride Night featuring Butch Hobson and Monkey Boy
CHANGE IN JULY 4 TIME
The Silver Knights July 4 game will now begin at 10:30 a.m. at Holman, a half hour earlier than originally scheduled, and will be a seven inning game. That will help avoid last year’s issue when the nine inning that was dragging had to be halted due to the city of Nashua needing to prepare for the holiday fireworks and remaining festivities.
