The wait is over for former Merrimack High and Nashua Silver Knight standout Mickey Gasper.
After going 0 for 20 in his Major League career, Gasper reached on an infield single for his first ever Major League hit on Saturday in the Minnesota Twins’ 5-1 loss at St. Louis.
Gasper’s infield hit was a grounder deep in the hole to the right of Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn, on the outfield grass. Winn bounced a throw to first that Gasper was able to just beat out leading off the top of the eighth inning. He was later forced at second on a grounder off the bat of Jose Miranda on a fielder’s choice. The afternoon game was nationally televised on FS1.
It’s been something Gasper has been craving after going 0 for 18 with the Red Sox last August/September, the NESN TV cameras constantly zooming in on his parents,Mick Sr.and Livia, intensely watching during all of his at bats. They were in attendance at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and cameras were on them again.
“That’s why you play, for them,” Mickey Gasper told MLB.com after the game. “All the hours my dad, my mom put in getting me to practices and games, coaching, it’s really all for them.”
This was Gasper’s first game of the 2025 season. He went 1 for 3, as he popped to short in the top of the second with one out and a runner at third — the run was knocked in by the next hitter Willi Castro with a double, and flew out to right leading off the top of the fifth.
Gasper was traded to the Twins by the Red Sox this past Christmas Eve, while in December of 2023 he was plucked by the Sox from the Yankees in the Rule V Minor League Draft. He tore up Triple A last summer in Worcester, which resulted in his promotion to Boston. With the Sox he was basically a utility player, mostly at second base, and was eventually sent back down to Worcester at the end of August but was recalled later in September.
He found out last Monday he made the Twins Opening Day roster for one accomplishment this season, and now he has another.
