March has arrived, so mark these dates on your calendars

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Mar 3, 2025

Congratulations, if you are reading this, that means you have survived the dreaded months of January and February.

March at times can be no picnic, but it is the month that begins with winter and ends with spring. The end of the tunnel, and it’s filled with important sports dates and of course plenty of Madness.

Here goes:

TODAY, MONDAY, MARCH 3

It’s the start of the Division I girls hoop tournament, with Portsmouth at Bishop Guertin, Alvirne at Salem, Nashua North at Windham and South at Londonderry. A couple of tough matchups and a couple of really good ones.

Oh, and the Rivier softball team opens up against a plethora of opponents at the Space Coast Complex in Melbourne, Fla.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4-5

The rest of the Division I-II tourney party, plus hockey. Tuesday is just the boys Division II hoop prelims with an all local Souhegan at Hollis Brookline matchup; Wednesday it’s the Division II girls, Division I boys and also the hockey prelims for Division I and II.

Who’s playing? In girls hoop, it’ll be Hollis Brookline and Souhegan. With boys, Nashua South vs. Merrimack, and BG and Alvirne both at home. In hockey, possibly no one playing in Division I and maybe Merrimack-HB-Deryfield in Division II? Check to be sure.

THURSDAY, MARCH 6

The Division I girls prelims survivors will be in the quarters on this night. BG could be headed up to Concord to face Concord Christian if they survive Portsmouth tonight.

FRIDAY, MARCH 7

It’s the Divison II boys hoop quarterfinals (HB or Souhegan on the road?) but there’s even more significance to the day: The NHL Trade Deadline is at 3 p.m.

Will the Bruins be buyers or sellers? Will Brad Marchand be dealt despite his injury? We say they may buy low. Or sell low.

SATURDAY, MARCH 8

The busiest day of the tourney season with Division I boys, Division II girls hoop, and all division hockey quarterfinals.

Oh and once all that’s done, settle in and watch the Celtics-Lakers on national TV (ABC) from TD Garden.

MONDAY, MARCH 10

Your phone will be blowing up starting shortly after noon. That’s when the NFL Free Agent “legal tampering” period begins. Your New England Patriots should, as their beloved former coach Jerod Mayo said, “burn some cash.”

Oh, and check the flight schedule for Rochester as the Division II boys hoop semifinals will be at the Spaulding Rec Center. Or you can head to Pinkerton for the Division I girls hoop semifinals. Much more convenient, right?

TUESDAY, MARCH 11

The hated Florida Panthers come to TD Garden for a 7 p.m. game. Who will be left on the Bruins? Remember when two years ago Boston would always be a heavy favorite in this matchup?

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12

Busiest day of the tourney season – possibly. Yes, we saunter out to Rochester for the Division I boys hoop semis, or Pinkerto for the Division II girls hoop semis. Or the Manchester’s JFK Coliseum for the Division I boys hockey semis – or up the Everett Arena for the Division II boys hockey semis. Yikes it is busy. Or, after 4 p.m. NFL free agents can officially sign their deals.

THURSDAY, MARCH 13

The Red Sox are at the Mets in Port St. Lucie, two weeks away from the season opener. We mention this because we wonder if Juan Soto will be in the Mets lineup.

FRIDAY, MARCH 14

There’s no games going on; any teams left in the tourneys are practicing for perhaps the final time before their tourney finals. But at Rivier University there is the annual Nashua Sport Management Summit, in which students can mingle with all types of sports industry leaders, as well as media. Yes, yours truly will be a panelist. The food should be good, right?

SATURDAY, MARCH 15

Finals Day, Part 1. The Divison I and II girls hoop finals will be at UNH’s Lundholm Gym, while the hockey finals for all divisions including girls will be in Manchester at SNHU Arena. Will area fans have to choose between local teams? We’ll see.

SUNDAY, MARCH 16

Finals Day, Part 2: Ah, the Division I and II boys hoop finals at UNH’s Lundholm Gym. And then it’s also Selection Sunday for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Hoop Tournaments. Bracket time.

TUES-WEDNESDAY MARCH 18-19

It’s the First Four for the NCAA men’s tourney. Kind of a warmup, right? And also a cool down continues from the end of the high school winter seasons.

THURSDAY-FRIDAY, MARCH 20-21

It’s the start of the NCAA men’s (Thursday) and women’s (Friday) tournaments. March Madness is offically in full swing.

MONDAY MARCH 23

If we do the math right, this should be the official opening day for local high school spring sports teams to practice. Will the snow be all melted?

THURSDAY, MARCH 27

Yes, it’s the NCAA Men’s Sweet 16, but more importantl, it’s Opening Day for Major League Baseball. It all starts, people; your Red Sox will be at the Texas Rangers at 4:05 p.m. We still can’t get used to these March openers, but hey, it’ll get you in the spring mood. Again, hopefully the snow is gone to help that.

SUNDAY, MARCH 30

Fittingly, on the final day of March, we’ll know who is in the Final Four of the NCAA men’s and women’s tourneys, as the final two Elite Eight games are played.

Oh, and this is the first day of the Annual NFL League Meetings at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla. You know, the one where Bill Belichick used to stare at the media while sipping orange juice, which Jerod Mayo would spill, and they take that stupid Coaches Photo.

Enjoy March. Hopefully you’ll hear the noises of lambs by the time it ends.
