It’s still Patriots Reign after a snoozer of a Super Bowl

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Feb 10, 2025

Well that was about four hours of our lives we’ll never get back.

When we don’t have a rooting interest, we’d really like a close game, you know? Especially with the Super Bowl.

But Super Bowl LIX and the Philadelphia Eagles dominant offensive and defensive lines took us back to the 1970s and ’80s as far as the big game was concerned, when those decades brought us Super Bowl snoozers.

And that’s what Sunday’s 40-14 Eagles win over the Chiefs was.

And while Patriots fans could take delight in the fact that the Chiefs didn’t pull off the threepeat, something New England never did, this was just bad football. Whatever could go wrong did for KC, but it wasn’t an accident.

We told you this Eagles team is good. We had them penciled in for the Super Bowl back in late November; they just seemed to find their stride. Then they roared through the NFC playoffs, and never looked back.

It was fitting that Tom Brady was in the booth for FOX; he directed the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. And he also QB’d his Tampa Bay Bucs in the last Super Bowl blowout, also over the Chiefs 32-9.

The common theme: Kansas City’s offensive line was dominated.

Brady mentioned it, and that’s what we pretty much told you would happen.

So, Patriots fans, still want the shiny new toy, Colorado’s Travis Hunter, in the NFL draft?

The game has all these variables, all these schemes, but it really becomes simple. You win games at the line of scrimmage. Your QB is usually able to find the open receivers and hit them on a dime why? Because he has the time to throw.

Your team is getting constant great field position, taking advantage of turnovers and thriving with points off turnovers. Why? Your defensive line is creating havoc.

And that’s what the Eagles did on Sunday.

For the average fan, that was a shame. For Patriot fans, they were likely loving every minute of it, seeing Patrick Mahomes reduced to pile of rubble. For all his lousy work in the booth this season, Brady did have the very observant comment that Mahomes was skiddish and didn’t trust his line by simply observing his footwork.

If we were FOX, we’d have Brady as the third man in the booth with Greg Olsen. The broadcast would be so much better.

And now we have to figure out what to do with our Sundays without football. Judging from the forecast, we’ll have plenty of snow over the next couple of weeks as winter is thriving. But pitchers and catchers are reporting later this week, right? And we do think the Red Sox are going to grab a much needed righthanded bat.

Good grief, that’s how bad this game was. We had to slip the Red Sox into a Super Bowl column. And purely subjective, the halftime show for the most part with Kendrick Lamar matched the game, but its message was important. We just expected a bit more.

In any event, another football season is in the books, and now we’ll see what the Chiefs try to do to retool.

But one thing’s for sure: As far as Super Bowl history goes, it’s still Patriot Reign.
