Another empty ending to an empty Patriots season

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jan 5, 2025

The Final Day has arrived.

The question is, is it Judgement Day?

Many have said that day has come and gone when it comes to rookie head coach Jerod Mayo. The fans spoke their mind last Saturday during the rout suffered at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers, but ownership has remained silent. There’s no question Mayo has made missteps but is it fair to fire a rookie head coach with a bad roster after one season?

Meanwhile, his players mouthing off at the fans do him no favors. Jahlani Tavai tried to temper his Boston radio remarks that fans “should know their place” but then almost made it worse by telling fans “don’t be a critic.” And this after Mayo said he had talked to him.

Not good.

That means today will be an interesting atmosphere. The game means nothing; Buffalo’s Josh Allen will make a cameo to keep his starting streak in tact and then exit stage left. The Patriots have a host of injured players who won’t play, including their best defender, corner Christian Gonzalez. By the second half it should be Mitch Trubisky vs.Joe Milton III; if rookie QB Drake Maye gets hurt in any way Mayo’s hot seat will explode, so one would think he’d be off the field at some point.

But who knows? The crowd will be hostile; the question is how much of a crowd will there be. Tickets can be had cheap, there will likely be plenty of no shows, and that will certainly be something ownership will consider. It’s like a preseason game, fans who normally can’t go get a chance from season ticket holders who don’t want to waste their time. But that’s a warm summer evening. Who wants to sit in the January cold?

Meanwhile, here’s our last look at the regular season with seven picks:

PATRIOTS 17, BILLS 16

Good grief, how the heck can we pick this thing? The Bills won’t care, but the Patriots may care just a teeny weeny bit more, unless you’re the front office that wants that No. 1 pick. Worth a point and a win.

DOLPHINS 20, JETS 14

Even without Tua the Dolphins, who may or may not be still alive for the postseason, should be able to beat the Jets, who quit the season back in October. Sad but true.

BRONCOS 30, CHIEFS 17

No Mahomes, etc. Broncos need to win to stay alive. They Nix the Chiefs in Denver, as the visitors have absolutely nothing to play for.

TITANS 12, TEXANS 10

Another game with a bad team playing vs. a good team that has zippo to play for. The Texans were one-point favorites, too. Normally they’d be something like 12.

LIONS 40, VIKINGS 37

This game is going to be off the chain, offensively ridiculous. How else can you explain it when the loser will still have won 14 games and end up as the fifth seed?

EAGLES 17, GIANTS 12

Everyone thinks the Giants will win because the Eagles are playing their scrubs and sitting Saquon Barkley. They don’t know that those scrubs are better than the the G-Men’s starters.

FALCONS 30, PANTHERS 20

Shootout in the ATL. Atlanta could have won the division, but now will have to settle for looking forward to a full season of Michael Penix at QB in eight months because the Bucs will obliterate the Saints to win the South.

LAST WEEK: 6-1

SEASON: 81-38
