Patriots have chance to shift the critics to the Dolphins

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Oct 6, 2024

So is this what it’s come down to? The New England Patriots are reeling because they’re simply not that good, and we all knew that going in.

Yet after four games there are people saying that rookie head coach Jerod Mayo has lost the locker room?

What happened to “Take them to the hill!”???

“It’s always frustrating when you’re not winning,” Mayo said. “The guys put a lot of work in, and everyone wants to try to find a solution right now while we’re going through this transition. People are definitely frustrated, and that’s a normal human response.”

Exactly. Winning would stop a lot of the restless atmosphere, and if you think the Patriots are in tough shape, how about today’s opponent, Miami? The Dolphins are coming to Gillette today one loss away from possibly being irrelevant as well.

“When I took this job, I knew the lumps would come,” Mayo said. “It’s part of the transition.”

It’s part of losing, but we’ll see today if that continues. Meanwhile, we finally shook off the 4-3 blues last week:

PATRIOTS 13, DOLPHINS 10

These two have one thing in common: They can’t score. But Miami’s offense seems worse, and in going to Tyler Huntley, it doesn’t scream points. The Dolphins really screwed up not signing a more capable backup plan. The Patriots take some heat off their rookie head coach.

BILLS 30, TEXANS 27

Buffalo needs to rebound from its horrendous showing on Sunday Night football vs. the Ravens, and there just seems to be something a little off with the Texans this year. Just a hunch.

RAVENS 33, BENGALS 27

The Ravens seem to have righted the ship, and the Bengals find out early on they’re not playing Carolina anymore. But Joe Burrow will still give Baltimore’s defense fits.

SEAHAWKS 40, GIANTS 7

This is a bad New York team, and the G-Men never do well in Seattle anyway. Now, the Seahawks may be looking ahead to Thusday night’s game with the Niners. Geno Smith, though not perfect, is looking like the QB the Giants should have kept, no?

NINERS 24, CARDINALS 21

Another close one. They all are these days, with a few exceptions, as the margin for error is so razor thin. Injuries are really keeping us from seeing the real 49ers, but after Week 1 we’ve seen the real Cardinals, and they’re not as good.

VIKINGS 24, JETS 16

The Jets look like a mess, incredible that they couldn’t score a touchdown at home vs. Denver, bad weather or no bad weather. Now they’re thrown off kilter by this London trip, and the Vikes’ Sam Bradford will announce after torching the New York secondary he’s staying to run for Parliment. Cheers.

COWBOYS 17, STEELERS 13

Pittsburgh’s got a great defense that will give Dak Prescott and the Cowboys trouble, since Dallas really can’t run the ball. Pittsburgh can, sort of, and that keeps the Steelers in it but not over the top.

LAST WEEK: 6-1

SEASON: 18-10
