Keep it real, Brissett can’t throw TD passes from the ground

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 30, 2024

And here we go again.

See Jacoby Brissett. See Jacoby Brissett go back to throw. See Jacoby Brissett run . See Jacoby Brissett run for his life. See Jacoby Brissett get hit. See Jacoby Brissett get back up.

See the New England Patriots lose.

The coaches in the media are once again calling for Drake Maye, after the 49ers smothered the Patriots 30-13 on Sunday. Yes, the Patriots showed a bit more fight. They stayed within an arm’s length of an injury ravaged 49er team until they couldn’t reach that far for fear of that arm getting chopped off by SF’s Nick Bosa or (fill in any pass rusher’s name).

It’s getting ridiculous. You think Maye would do any better with the slop the Patriots have up front? What made it worse on Sunday was the loss of center David Andrews (shoulder). Rookie Caedan Wallace also went down.

Six sacks, numerous pressures and who knows how many QB hits.

Oh but it’s all Brissett’s fault, you hear. When a QB doesn’t have time, he looks bad. He makes mistakes, like Brissett finally did by throwing a pick six.

Oh no! Get Maye in there right away!

Really, enough. What did you think would happen Sunday with this matchup? What you saw was a vast difference in talent. Yes, the Patriots defense could hold the dam for only so long. It’s the strength of the team, obviously.

Meanwhile, Brissett spoke to the team in the locker room after the game.

“When we started this, we never thought it was going to be just on an escalator, you go up automatically,” Brissett said. “We knew there were going to be bumps in the road, we were going to be knocked down, and be tired, be hurt. That doesn’t stop the climb, that puts a little adversity in the climb. I told the guys that’s what we’re good for in this room. You can go back a look at everybody’s stories – not everybody, but a lot of players’ stories how they got into that room. It wasn’t easy to get there. … The best part about being in this league early in the season is you’ve got time to pick yourself up.”

Who the heck was going to pick Brissett up? The Patriots have to know they can’t let him absorb too much more of this beating, nor their prize No. 3 overall pick. It was somewhat surprising that the Patriots didn’t sign a veteran QB for the practice squad, someone who eventually could step in to take some of Brissett’s hits.

Brissett was asked in so many words how could he possibly last 17 games like this?

“Just keep getting up,” Brissett said. “That’s all I can do. That’s all I’ll keep doing.”

And Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo will continue to say the Brissett is his quarterback, but he’ll look at the film and when a change needs to be made, he’ll make it. It should be an auto message.

The Patriots looked more focused and prepared than they did vs. the Jets – who by the way looked silly on offense as well in losing to the Broncos. But teams that lose in the NFL simply do so because they can’t score.

“I told the guys it is a long season,” Mayo said. “…I don’t think any of us are happy where we are.”

We know Jacoby Brissett isn’t. Because the ground is not a fun place to be.
