Patriots still have enough drama to keep you interested

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 15, 2024

Never a dull moment in Foxborough, right?

Let’s see if we can go over the New England Patriots sideshow of the last week, even after they’ve stunned the world with their season-opening win.

First, Robert Kraft is not happy about not being selected in the past for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Can’t blame him, but let’s not put that before the team.

Second, Bill Belichick won’t even talk about the Patriots in his media appearances, etc. Get over it, Bill.

Third, Drake Maye doesn’t spend enough time talking to the coaches on the sidelines. Really? Enough.

Fourth, Chukwuma Okorafor reportedly informs the team he’s outta here. Got things to do, people to see, and give me a guard, not tackle spot. Not happening, and the door may just hit him on the way out.

But perhaps we’re saved: Malcom Butler, with Seattle in town, will be ringing the bell pre-game at the top of the Lighthouse. If only Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson were going to be there, too.

Meanwhile, it was a mediocre first week – thanks in part to the Patriots surprise – so we’ll look to, as they say, get better — without drama:

SEAHAWKS 24, PATRIOTS 17

Sorry, not on that bandwagon just yet. These teams are almost mirror images, each with a 100-yard running back, game manager quarterback, and decent defense. Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett is familiar with a Mike MacDonald defense, but it works both ways. Tough call.

JETS 27, TITANS 13

Hell hath no fury than an Aaron Rodgers scorned, as he told doubting Jet fans this week if they want to jump off the bandwagon, fine, but don’t climb back on. This should keep them on their for a bit,and then they have the Patriots next week.Titans aren’t the same without Derrick Henry.

CHIEFTS 30, BENGALS 24

Cincinnati will rue the day it took the Patriots lightly, because they jump from the frying pan into the fire. Chiefs are dinged up a bit but they should prevail. If the Patriots did, why not them?

LIONS 27, BUCS 24

A good one, and as well as Baker Mayfield has played for Tampa Bay, the Lions should be able to contain him as they tried to fortify their secondary in the off-season. More kneecaps get bitten off, but not too many.

COWBOYS 33, SAINTS 17

Dak’s Cowboys are riding high early in the season once again, as usual. Derek Carr finds out fairly quickly he’s not playing Carolina again this week.

COLTS 24, PACKERS 21

Upset special. We doubt very much Jordan Love will play, and Anthony Richardson is just getting his feet wet, it’s still early. But you know what happens when it’s early: upsets. This should be one of them.

TEXANS 27, BEARS 13

Who would ever have guessed a year ago this time that these two would be playing on Sunday Night Football? Houston deserves it; the Bears are on there because of the No. 1 overall pick, QB Caleb Williams. Had it been a lineman instead of a QB, well…forget it. And Da Bears would have less of a chance than they do tonight.

LAST WEEK: 4-3

SEASON: 4-3
