September’s here, and for sports fans it’s time to cheer

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 2, 2024

Welcome, September.

For many, it’s their favorite month, a mix of summer and fall.

For those in the sports media world, it means no more down time. Especially in the high school sports media world. You see, July is really the only month of the year in which no high school events are played at all.

Point being, it’s a busy month all around, so let’s help you out by noting these key September dates:

TUESDAY, SEPT. 3

It’s the day after Labor Day and that means schools are already started and the sports schedule next week is full bore. Game of the day: the Hollis Brookline at Campbell boys soccer game, given that the Cougars have made the leap up a division. Should be great one.

Also, head over to Rivier University’s Merrill Field that night for the Raiders and their new coach, Jon Cross, vs. Plymouth State

FRIDAY-SATURDAY, SEPT. 6-7

The high school football regular season finally gets underway locally. Stellos Stadium is the place to be, as it will be defending Division I champion Bedford at Nashua North, and then on Saturday night it’s Nashua South vs. Bishop Guertin. Must-see football.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 8

Finally, NFL regular season football, and your New England Patriots will be traveling to Cincinnati. Should we cover our eyes, hide under the bed, watch another game, or go apple picking? You decide. It may not be pretty. But starting this day it’s football on Sundays through early February from 1 p.m. to midnight. Enjoy.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY, SEPT. 12-15

It may not matter by this time, but it’s the final series of the regular season between the Yankees and Red Sox, this one in New York. It could matter for one team, it would be fun if it did for both.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 15

It’s the Patriots home opener, so you know there’ll be a big crowd. Wonder if it will be that way the rest of the season. Oh, the opponent? The Seattle Seahawks. It’s the only Pats home game for the month.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 18

Ready for some hockey? Guaranteed to be a warm day, right? That’s because it’s the first day of Bruins training camp at Warrior Arena in Brighton. Yes, puckheads, your time is fast approaching. Wait, didn’t they just play the Cup Finals?

THURSDAY, SEPT. 19

One more Patriots game, simply because it’s their only – at least for now – national TV appearance of the regular season, and it’s at the Jets and Aaron Rodgers. Why not, right?

MONDAY, SEPT. 23 THROUGH SATURDAY, SEPT. 28

It’s Battle of the Bridge Week! Our favorite time of the fall, and the Nashua North and South coaches least favorite, believe us. The varsity field hockey game at Stellos on Monday, boys-girls soccer doubleheader at Stellos on Tuesday, the varsity volleyball match on Wednesday evening, and of course the big North-South varsity football game on Friday night. Those are the highlights, but there are sub-varsity events, etc., so check the school schedules.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 24

The champions are back – it’s the first official day of Boston Celtics training camp. They will be in the limelight all the way into June, you better believe it.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 29

Ok, one more Pats game – they wrap up the month for us with their visit to the San Francisco 49ers. Could get ugly, folks, and after this is when we think you may see Drake Maye, if he wasn’t named the starter for the opener (not known as of this writing earlier this week.)

Also, it’s the final game of the regular season for the Red Sox, and the odds are it may be their last game of the season, period. Good thing is it’s at Fenway Park, vs. Tampa Bay. Keep your Sox on.
