By Tom King - Staff Writer | Aug 7, 2024

One ticket has been punched to the Futures Collegiate Baseball League Finals, but an opening still remains.

Westfield blanked New Britain 4-0 on Tuesday to reach its first ever FCBL championship series in its first postseason opportunity. But Norwich bounced back and downed Vermont 7-2 at Centennial Field in Burlington, forcing a deciding Game 3 at Dodd Stadium tonight in Norwich, Conn.

Here’s a look at the semis:

WESTFIELD 4, NEW BRITAIN 0

The Starfires, after banging out 13 hits in Game 1, outhit the Bees 12-4 in Game 2, scoring three runs in the fourth, the key hit a two-run single by Kyle Grabowski. Danny Hussey went 4 for 5 for the winners.

Westfield’s Jake Jachym tossed eight innings of four-hit ball, walking just one and striking out six.

NORWICH 7, VERMONT 2

The Sea Unicorns stayed alive, evening the series at one game apiece thanks to scoring five runs from the fifth through the seventh to take control after being down 2-1. Nick Tomasetto’s two run single in the fifth gave the Unicorns the lead for good, 3-2, that they never relinquished. Alex Izarry and Kaiden Dossa homered for Norwich, whose four relievers tossed scoreless ball and issued zero walks.

Vermont’s two runs came in the fourth on Dante Pozzi’s RBI single and an error on the play.
