NASHUA – There was no sixth sense for the Nashua James E. Coffey Post on Tuesday.
Portsmouth Post 6 scored twice in the bottom of the second and held on to dethrone Nashua 2-1,and take home the title of New Hampshire American Legion Senior Baseball Tournament Champions.
Portsmouth went a perfect 4-0 on its way to the championship, downing Bedford and Lebanon while defeating Nashua twice. Coupled with their four regular season wins over Coffey, Booma Post went a perfect 6-0 vs.the locals.
Jason Pinsonnault (Winnacunnet/Western New England) allowed just six baserunners while registering six strikeouts in a complete-game effort on the bump for Portsmouth. A good effort by Nashua’s Elias Bourque (North/Plymouth St.) was wasted, as he allowed two runs on eight hits in the loss.
“[It was] similar to the last time we played them,” said Coffey skipper Tim Lunn. “We played a lot cleaner of a game in terms of defense and even pitching, but offensively we had a lot of opportunities – I thought more opportunities than they did – and we just couldn’t get the hit.”
Portsmouth now advances to the Northeast Regional Tournament which begins on August 7 at Gill Stadium in Manchester.
For many of the Nashua players, this marks the final game played together after coming up together through youth, Junior, and Senior teams.
As for the players heading back to high school, “They still have a lot of promise and many of them have aspirations of playing afterward,” explained Lunn. “There’s still a lot of work to be done for those guys, and just kind of telling them that they have got to keep working. Because the game always teaches you, and you have got to learn those lessons from it. Not only players and coaches, but also people.”
