Here’s your guide to what should be a magnificent May

By Tom King - Staff Writer | May 6, 2024

Wow. May is almost a week done already.

We always say that on Presidents Day in mid-to-late February, you blink and Memorial Day is here.

Well, in three weeks that will be the case. Incredible, which means we’re spring sports home stretch and getting closer and closer to tourney time once again.

But here’s a look at your monthly sports planner, local, regional, national, but we’ll have to leave out the dates for the Celtics or Bruins playoffs as there’s nothing guaranteed, etc.

MONDAY MAY 6 (Today)

Have the Bruins been waiting for a year go get their revenge on the Florida Panthers? We’ll start to find out tonight, when the two teams meet in Sunrise, Fla. in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference semifinals.

Of course Bruins fans remember how the eighth seed Panthers eliminated Boston with a Game 7 OT goal at TD Garden, which made it so nerve wracking for them on Saturday night. Still wondering how the heck the Leafs simply let David Pastrnak skate in all alone…

TUESDAY, MAY 7

Speaking of Riv, head over to Raider Diamond for a 7 p.m. Battle of the Bridge, softball style, encounter. It’s the biggest game of the year for the Nashua High School North-South softball teams, and likely the biggest crowd they’ll play in front of during the course of the season.

And don’t forget, it’s also Game 1 of the Celtics-Cavs Eastern Conference semi at TD Garden. Sweep for C’s we say.

A week into May already?

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8

It’s a big day for Bishop Guertin lacrosse. If you feel like a short road trip, head on up to Bedford to catch the Cardinals girls lacrosse against the defending Division I champion Bulldogs, a major test for BG.

There are a few Bishop Guertin High School boys games on the calendar that you circle, usually the out-of-state encounters, and the Cards’ boys battle vs. Xaverian Brothers of Westwood, Mass.is one. Xaverian is around .500 right now, but the competition they play is top notch and they should give BG, which now knows it will be in a fight for a Division I title, a game and a good experience, 6 p.m. at Stellos.

Tough choice.

FRIDAY, MAY 10

Head over to Holman for the Bishop Guertin vs. Nashua South baseball game. The three must-see games every spring are North-South (which was slated for Friday night of this current weekend), BG-South, and we’ll let you know later in this prose when BG-North is.

Also, it’s the first day of a two-day New England Patriots Rookie Camp. There will be a buzz for sure with Drake Maye.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY, MAY 16-19

It’s the next major for professional golf, the PGA championship. Still getting used to the switch from its previous August dates to May, but we’ll go with it. It will be at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY, MAY 21-22

Here you go, Monday is the date of the North-BG baseball matchup at Holman. It will be at p.m., and at that point, the final week of the regular season, it should be interesting as both teams should be jockeying for position in the Division I tourney, or depending on how things go, simply looking to qualify. Let’s hope it’s the former.

It’s also the start of the state team tennis tournament, with the girls starting Tuesday and boys on Wednesday. For boys, two teams to really keep an eye on, the Nashua South and Hollis Brookline squads. For girls, the Bishop Guertin (in Division I), and our pick for Division II, Souhegan. The Sabers probably won’t play in this round.

FRIDAY, MAY 24

It has arrived! It’s Nashua Silver Knights Opening Night – not just the home opener at Holman Stadium, but the season opener overall. The Knights will be taking on the Vermont Lake Monsters as it all starts, going for two-and-a-half months. Nashua fans will be hoping for a return to the playoffs, and the key will be how they start the season over the first couple of weeks. They are home Friday, Saturday and Sunday to start the season, a rarity.

MONDAY, MAY 27

Yes, Memorial Day has arrived. No Silver Knights home game, but perhaps they’ll be some Bruins or Celtics postseason action. But meanwhile, one thing we do know is your Boston Red Sox will be at Camden Yards for a 1:05 p.m. game vs. the Baltimore Orioles, whom we feel is the best team in the American League.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 29

Tourney Time: It’s the day of the Division II girls tennis finals at Dover High School, and we feel strongly the Souhegan Sabers will vie for a title. It starts at 4 p.m. Also on this day: Softball prelims. We think Merimack and BG should be there in Division I, HB at the very least in Division II and perhaps Campbell. We’ll see.

THURSDAY, MAY 30

It’s the start of the NHIAA Baseball Tournament, preliminary round. The toughest one-and-done tournament there is. Locally, who will we see? South, North, Merrimack and BG in Division I? Souhegan looks good in Division II and Campbell in Division III. Stay tuned.

FRIDAY, MAY 31

We wrap up the month with the NHIAA boys volleyball prelims. Hollis Brookline and Souhegan will be in locally, but may get a pass in this round, who knows.

And then….June arrives. But let’s enjoy May first. We don’t want to rush the warm weather months now, do we?
